Firefox, Nautilus, what could be the culprit?

For some time, I've been having odd behaviour with firefox in gnome. (could be with other dm/wm, haven't checked though)

Please see a screenshot:

This usually happens when loading multiple tabs simultaneously. Also I've found out that firefox uses quite alot memory, about 95 megs.

Is there something I could do to amend this?

Metacity is probably the culprit of that nasty firefox window. There was a thread about it a while ago.

Yes, I've seen that. That is Metacity doing its thing... Try the devel version (2.13.5 IIRC), it's apparently much improved.

Re Firefox taking up 95 megs of memory... Is that listed under "RSS memory" or "Virtual Machine size" in Gnome System Monitor? If it's under "Virtual Machine size" it's not at all accurate - by that method of measurement, whatever the hell it is, Java eats up over 300 MB of memory, when in reality it is restricted to 64 or thereabouts. Under the "Virtual Machine size" column, Firefox usually is shown as using 95-100 megs, but it actually uses 25-35.[/img]

Thanks guys!

I'll try the devel version. By the way, can I just edit the 2.12 package build file to point to devel version 2.13.8 or is that likely to cause mayhem in my system?

Gullible Jones: it's the VM size, so I guess there's one worry less..
