How can one fix this? Is this even related to hinting?
I've tried some hinting settings though. Alas.
I need very crisp glyphs (easier for my eyes).
So probably without AA and/or subpixels?
Basically i'm trying to achieve the same
rendering style as in winxp, to begin with..
Can these artefacts be related to the font itself
and not the fontconfig settings?

Go to the AUR and install infinality -- its waaaay better than winxp...

I've tried infinality and infinality-bundle too.
Couldn't get the sharpness i need.
When i tweak it myself i get exactly this.
At least infinality has the infctl tool.
Which i don't find in the bundle version.

Did you even read the archwiki link? If you did some tweaks, what did you do? What can you show in terms of your current hinting and other settings? What fonts?

Of course frankGoa, been reading through it.
Added 99-clearfonts.conf
https://launchpad.net/clearfonts
and sharpfonts from Aur.
ttf-ms-fonts, plus imported
all ms fonts from the old winxp os.
It's a bit puzzling to me what typefaces
are being rendered by the webpage. How do i know?
Fontconfig font family matching rules?
In terms of params it seems
sharpfonts take over because of 99-

I am not a font guy but straight away, that conf you are using was created for ubuntu and it is dated 2010. The syntax used in that conf doesn't match what I see in my conf.d configs. Can you please follow the archwiki? Or use a preset configuration like infinality? I will not be able to assist you unless you do but maybe a font guy can jump in and give some suggestions. Good luck.

sharpness
If using Infinality's patches, then play with INFINALITY_FT_FILTER_PARAMS, e.g.:
export INFINALITY_FT_FILTER_PARAMS="06 25 44 25 06"That should be fairly sharp.
