Unable to use ATI radeon on linux 3.13

Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop

$  lspci -k | grep -A3 VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV730/M96 [Mobility Radeon HD 4650/5165]
        Subsystem: Dell Device 0447
        Kernel driver in use: fglrx_pci
        Kernel modules: radeon, fglrx

Booting using the 2014.03.01 installer (has the 3.13.5 kernel) completely hangs up my system after some initial loading. I can only boot by setting the nomodeset parameter. After installing xorg and ati drivers and rebooting, I either get a black screen, or the following errors.

I am currently using the legacy catalyst drivers + Xorg 1.12. It works, but it has its own set of issues (eg. screenshots not working on KDE)

Is there a easy fix for this so that I can use the open source drivers for my old ATI card or is it a kernel bug and needs to be reported upstream?

Re: Unable to use ATI radeon on linux 3.13

sounds like a kernel bug, but needs some more troubleshooting.

Mar 10 14:21:28 sdh-archlinux kernel: [drm] radeon: dpm initialized

Try booting without nomodeset and with  radeon.dpm=0 to see if that changes things.

Are you booting through UEFI or BIOS ?
Also check if you're running the latest uefi/bios version for your system.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: Unable to use ATI radeon on linux 3.13

Its a BIOS laptop. No new BIOS updates since 2011

I did try with radeon.dpm=0. No effect, booted to black screen. Also, using the radeon driver either boots to tty login with above errors, or boots to a locked up black screen.

Re: Unable to use ATI radeon on linux 3.13

I used radeon.agpmode=-1 (pci) on A+I and it drops the Radeon from working (I haven't gotten it to work yet).

I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...

Re: Unable to use ATI radeon on linux 3.13

I had a similar problem (although in my case I could actually see the kernel messages on screen). In my case, the GPU would hang due to new runtime power management code in Linux 3.13

You can try booting with kernel parameter radeon.runpm=0 and see if that fixes your problem (it may not)

Best thing to do is to try and find the real cause of the problem though. Like Alex Deucher said, get the Linux kernel source code from git, and bisect between 3.12 and 3.13

Re: Unable to use ATI radeon on linux 3.13

Exactly the same problem as I'm having.

Guess we wait for a kernel patch/ fix?

Re: Unable to use ATI radeon on linux 3.13

Hi,

Although I'm a Ubuntu user, not Arch Linux's, but I had the same issue.
Passing radeon.dpm=0 solved the issue (as workaround).
Thank you so much for great information.

# radeon.runpm=0 doesn't solve the issue. Yeah, I firstly thought that this issue was related with acpi; I really had to use acpi=off.

[Edit]
My machine is AMD A8-6500 + MSI A78M-E35.
Without radeon.dpm=0, my machine reboots suddenly rather than blackout.
I have big difficulty of debugging.

Re: Unable to use ATI radeon on linux 3.13

Although I'm a Debian user, I had the same boot hangup issue when upgraded from 3.2.0-4 kernel to a newer one and resolved it without disabling modesetting. I added the boot parameters "radeon.dpm=0" and "radeon.pcie_gen2=0". My machine is a HP Envy 15 1090eg with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830. I saw this thread when searching for help, so I have to thank you guys.:)
