[SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

My computer boots into total black screen after recent update, including linux-3.13.6-1, xf86-video-intel-2.99.910-1 and systemd-210-3.  I have tried all combinations of rollback, I find  linux-3.12.7-2  + systemd-208-2 resolves my problem.

As I dig on, I find it a problem with systemd-backlight. With running kernel-3.13 and systemd-{210,211},  disabling systemd-backlight service either through kernel parameter systemd.restore_state=0 or by masking systemd-backlight service can fix my problem.

Still, I am not the only one experiencing black screen and unresponsive X input with 3.13 kernel: several radeon user seem to have similar phenomenon but cannot be fixed by disabling backlight restore.  I would suspect restoring backlight is just one of many ways to trigger this issue, I not experienced in kernel, but I will try to debug the problem. Help will be appreciated.

There seems nothing wrong with X, but a problem with power management.

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

It's not only with Intel. I have the same problem with the radeon driver on my Thinkpad T42 with Mobility Radeon X1300. I get a blank screen on boot unless I use nomodeset. Have you tried that?

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

Acutally my laptop is Radeon/Intel, and I have tried to disable modset of i915, no luck. I will try nomodset and update later.

I found a bug report on radeon, which might be related.

Ran into the same issue on my T60. Rolling back will fix this?

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

I ran into this as well with my Macbook Pro (1,1) which runs on Radeon X1600. After updating to systemd 210, I just added nomodeset to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" (in /etc/default/grub) and ran grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

After logging in I just ran sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1 and it worked just fine.

Although after updating to 211, I tried again and the new systemd loads the module and sets mode perfectly.

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

I don't think it's the backlight, because no matter what keys I press there is no hard disk activity.

When I boot with nomodeset, I'm using the radeon kernel module, according to lspci -v, but lsmod does not show radeon. I tried running the above command (sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1) and this locked up the whole system, as happens when booting without modeset.

I really have no idea what is happening here.

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

@gravewood: roll back did fix my problem, though I don't know why it works...

@acampbell: I was wrong, it's not backlight problem. I connected an external monitor, and saw nothing.

Today I tried to update to linux-3.13 and systemd-211. Setting nomodeset as kernel parameter can not help, and I still end up with black screen.

However, I find setting

systemd.restore_state=0

in kernel command line works for me. According to

http://www.freedesktop.org/software/sys … rvice.html
https://lwn.net/Articles/587373/

it's a change introduced by systemd-209, supported by recent kernel. As it's actually NOT a backlight problem, I would suspect there's something wrong with the implementation in kernel that messed up VGA while restoring brightness. I will try to dig more later.

That kernel command line doesn't work here.

I guess a detailed describing my problem without this kernel command may help us understand whether we are experiencing the same problem.

As mentioned before, I got hybrid HD5650 / Intel machine, when I try to boot with Intel and KMS on, the screen resolution is correctly set as soon as the kernel module is loaded. So it appears not a problem with KMS. Problem only happens when gdm/X is started, and though there is no error in Xorg.0.log, the monitor of laptop seems turned off (In comparison, I turned of backlight when it's working, and I could still see dim content when strong light is shed on screen.) and blind typing cannot log me into DE (verified through SSH).

If I disable Intel in BIOS and boot with Radeon and KMS on. I can reach GDM without problem, though a suspend would dim my screen completely and I find no way to restore brightness.

If I boot with Radeon and KMS off, the behavior is exactly the same to KMS off situation.

If you disable DM, can you boot to TTY correctly with KMS?

When I boot with nomodeset, I'm using the radeon kernel module, according to lspci -v, but lsmod does not show radeon. I tried running the above command (sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1) and this locked up the whole system, as happens when booting without modeset.

+1

kernel panics with radeon.modeset=1.
(kernelck and stock arch kernel both. using the stock radeon driver)

only way to get a booting system is to boot with nomodeset.
(And resolution is naturally messed up by doing this)

core/linux 3.13.6-1
extra/ati-dri 10.1.0-4
core/libsystemd 211-1

helps!

Kernel panic? oops, that seems different problem with mine. Thought we both end up with black screen, my kernel is still working and I can still ssh into my box. I am not experienced with kernel, but I guess your dmesg will help.

I had the same issue on my laptop recently try adding vga=773 to your kernel line in bootloader (you might have to change 773 to suit your resolution)

Are you using radeon or intel? As far as I understand, vga=773 will disable early KMS, and somehow similar to nomodeset kernel parameter.

Thanks for the help but no worky.
Kms works to some degree and I can get all the way to kdm/ and even dwm before it freezes/ hangs/ reboots.

nomodeset indeed disables the radeon driver and now I'm on vesa where everything works brilliantly (except resolution big_smile )

there are no usefull stuff in my logs but there seems to be 1000 posts about this in google.
only thing I can guess is the powemanagement whatever patch from 2011 which seems to have fixed this issue in the past, got removed?

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/d … 16498.html

here's a similar/ same problem in the past: (with no real fix as far as i can see.)

Am using xf86-video-intel

lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 03)

Only tried it and it worked for me

@Mikko777 difficult to tell if its systemd or kernel issue, long shot test linux-lts see it that works. At least rule out kernel....

My problem only happened a few days ago and was stumped as I getting a black screen and no console (Ctrl+Alt+F2 did not work either). So ruled out an X problem. Could get to log in if I used systemd.unit=rescue.target in bootloader but had to hit Control+D at just the right time.

Good advice. Installed linux-lts kernel and removed all "modeset" options from kernel line and the opensource radeon driver works just great now.

So since the only thing that I changed was the kernel, it has to be a kernel issue?

/me stays with lts

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

In my own case added i915 to modules in mkinitcpio and seems to be working ok. When you are staring at a blank screen it is very difficult to know how to approach the problem. I managed to use a live usb distro to start openssh and then was able too ssh in from my ipad. Have read some users are having problems with savage drivers, might  simply be down to age of hardware. Shame really as Arch was always great for bringing old hardware back to life.

Anyway glad you have got it working, right better leave forums before I get caught....

Using the lts kernel doesn't fix things for me so it isn't just the kernel.

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

Having a similar (?) issue. linux-3.13.7-1 and systemd-211-1.
GRUB loads the kernel, I get some messages and the screen turns off and the system gets unresponsive.
Adding nomodeset as kernel parameter helps to get at least a terminal.
With linux-lts-3.10.34-1 even X can be started.

I am clueless...

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

Earlier I discounted the idea that it was a backlight problem in my case, but now I've found that it is exactly that. I tried typing in my login details on the blank screen and then started X. I then ssh-ed in from another machine and everything was working as expected.

While all this was going on the backlight on the Thinkpad suddenly came on!  Unfortunately I've no idea what I did to make this happen and I haven't been able to reproduce it.

/sys/class/backlight/thinkpad_screen/brightness  has a value of 7 so it ought to be working. I can change this value with the Thinkpad keys but they don't make the backlight come on.

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

Hello! I seem to be having a similar problem to what is being discussed here. So I figured I would add what is going on with me.
I will try to keep it short but I apologize in advance for it being a bit long.

Hardware: 2006 Imac with Radeon mobility x1600

For me there was no problem before the systemd upgrade to 210 and the upgrade to 211 did not fix the problem of black screen on boot.

Also I upgraded my kernel from 3.13.5-1 to 3.13.6-1 after the problem with systemd started.

Downgrading systemd to 208.10 ( the kernel had been upgraded already) got the system working properly again.

I have since gone back to 211 and have found that:
If I wait for 5 - 10 minutes after the computer boots when I move the mouse the screen wakes up and I can unlock the screen and the computer works as normal.
Note: I am using gdm and gnome3. I think from this that my problem is a brightness/screen not being turned on issue?

If I add nomodeset to the kernel boot parameters the computer works but the Radeon drivers are not loaded.
and after booting with nomodeset if I use "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" my computer screen blacks and I have no response.

With both 210 and 211 I can press ctrl+alt+F2 type my username and password into the blind and give commands like "sudo reboot followed by the password" blindly to the computer and the computer will execute them.

I hope that this can be fixed soon... sad It is annoying at best.

EDIT
I tried  "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" again and found that I can press ctrl+alt+F2 and get a terminal login prompt that I can use and see! Although gdm login/gnome is still a black screen...

Re: [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

I can cofirm much of what BirdOfPray reports. This is on a Thinkpad T60 using Mobility Radeon X1300.

I don't use gdm or any desktop manager - just spectrwm.

I can get things working, with the correct resolution, using nomodeset.

Without nomodeset I can start a terminal by typing blindly and can then ssh to the machine from a different one. Just occasionally the screen does light up after a long delay, but I don't know if that is due to anything I do.

I tried to downgrade  systemd to 208-10 but couldn't get that to happen.

Following another thread here I installed linux-mainline from Aur; people using Intel have found that to be a solution, but the black screen persists for me.
