ConnectionAttemptFailed when pairing with Wiimote

I'm having a problem trying to connect to my Wiimote. I'm using a USB bluetooth adapter which has been working fine with a bluetooth mouse for months. Here's the output from bluetoothctl (5.16):

[bluetooth]# devices
Device 00:22:4C:80:67:A1 Nintendo RVL-CNT-01
Device 00:1F:20:36:54:88 Logitech Bluetooth Mouse M555b
[bluetooth]# agent on
Agent registered
[bluetooth]# pair 00:22:4C:80:67:A1 
Attempting to pair with 00:22:4C:80:67:A1
Failed to pair: org.bluez.Error.ConnectionAttemptFailed

I can find very little on this error message online. What can I do?

Five years ago Bluetooth on Linux was really easy.  Now it seems impossible to connect a Wiimote, I get the exact error you list.

Sorry to say I don't think I ever found a solution.

Thanks for confirming, JJJollyjim. Corwin, please don't necrobump, feel free to open a new topic if you are having a similar problem. Be sure to include details of how you have set up bluetooth and the relevant logs from a connection attempt.
