Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

Hej!

Earlier today I upgraded the kernel to 3.13.7-1. At the same time I also updated xf86-video-intel to 2.99.911-1.

After rebooting with this kernel Gummiboot just landed me on a black screen after the menu, I rebooted into the LTS kernel and checked the journal - there were no entries at all after the shutdown and the next entries were from the LTS boot. It seemed like the kernel was not loaded at all.

I downgraded the kernel back to 3.13.6-1 and could boot normally again.

Has anyone seen this? I didn't see a bug report in the Arch tracker or upstream, but I'm also not really sure what to look for because the problem is so vague.

This is on a Thinkpad T440s btw.

Re: Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

Try using a traditional bootloader like grub-efi or syslinux-efi.  You can install it onto your ESP without removing gummiboot.

If it boots with a traditional bootloader, it probably means that you are running into the dreaded EFISTUB bug that tends to hit mostly thinkpads.  There are a few threads about it around these forums.  Just ignore kernel versions because this has been happening off and on since somewhere around 3.7 or 3.6.

If it doesn't boot at all even with grub, then it is not the EFISTUB functionality in the kernel and you should look elsewhere.

Re: Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

This is possibly related to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179048

Also likely related to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33745

With such a long standing issue it would be nice to know if there was a way to get at some diagnostics during boot that would narrow down where the root cause of the problem is.

Re: Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

I had the exact same problem with gummiboot on a t440s today, and switching to grub fixed it for me, as WonderWoofy suggests.

Re: Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

This is almost certainly the bug that's discussed quite heavily in this thread.

Re: Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

Got hit by this today. Was using gummiboot, updated kernel and found I could no longer boot. Interesting that the T440s hung on the 'Lenovo' logo it displays at boot.

Switching to GRUB solved the issue.

Switching to GRUB has now solved it for me as well, makes me sad though because I liked Gummiboot and its simplicity.

You don't hav to switch entirely to grub.  UEFI has the advantage of being able to have more than one bootloader or boot manager.  So just leave it set up and go back to it when it works again.

Re: Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

Second to WonderWoofy's comment, although I have not yet done so I am intending to install grub alongside the existing refind-efi package in my system to provide a backup bootloader- and hopefully refind will be able to load grub from its menu which will then be able to boot the kernel if set up correctly.  That way I will hopefully be able to boot the offending efistub kernels that fail to load with refind.

Edit: Following suggestion from the author of rEFInd I downloaded the GNU-EFI compiled binary and used that instead of the binary in the stock arch rEFInd package. That boots the efistub 3.13.7 kernel for me successfully where the normal binary fails to load at all. However I had problems with the graphical boot with that kernel which is the subject of a kernel bug report at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=73291 which is a separate issue.

Re: Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

Ditto the multiple boot loader approach here as well. I have rEFInd (preferred) and SysLinux both installed. I tested both and got them working. If this ever happens again, I have choices now!

Re: Cannot boot linux-3.13.7-1

Same thing here with kernel 3.14.1-1. I'll keep working with the lts-kernel for now since I have some different issues with grub and no time to go after them. In my case, 3.13.x and even 3.14-x did well. After updating 3.14.1-1 and gummiboot 44-2 the bootloader crashed every time.
