The package name, version, architecture:
dhcpcd 6.3.1
wpa_supplicant 2.1-3
linux-3.13.7-1-i686
linux-lts-3.10.34-1-i686
WLAN: Atheros AR2427
A detailed description of the issue:
Normally the dhcpcd command starts a wpa_supplicant hook if:
- a file 'wpa_supplicant.conf' is found either at '/etc' or '/etc/wpa_supplicant/'
- the interfaces name begins with 'wl' (undocumented AFAIK!)
Since update
[PACMAN] upgraded dhcpcd (6.2.1-1 -> 6.3.1-1)
this hook is now apparently not started anymore, you have to manually start wpa_supplicant by yourself.
The service file 'dhcpcd@wlan0.service' does not work anymore.
This issue only affects i686-systems.
No changes where made to '/etc/dhcpcd.conf' after upgrading.
I've had the same issue inverted a while ago, when dhcpcd suddenly started to activate its wpa_supplicant hook which then conflicted with the network-wireless@.service file I got from the wiki here.
Look here: wpa_supplicant@.service fails to start
Downgrading to 'dhcpcd-6.2.1-1-i686' everything works as expected again.
On another PC (exact same hardware/architecture but RTL8187SE Wireless Lan) which worked flawless till last update I now get:
nl80211: Driver does not support authentication/assoziation or connect commands
enp2s0: Failed to initialize driver interface
but downgrading dhcpcd did not help!
Downgraded wpa_supplicant (2.1.-3 -> 2.0-4): Now WLAN is back!
This issue also affects a x86_64 system, Linux 3.13.7-1-x86_64 with RTL8188CU USB-WLAN stick which does not work anymore with updated latest wpa_supplicant.
As I don't know if this is a bug or just limited to my systems I would be thankful if anybody could confirm this issues.

Having the same issue here.
linux 3.13.8-1 i686 system
wpa_supplicant 2.1-3
dhcpcd 6.3.2-1
nl80211: Driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands
Could not read interface wlp12s0 flags: No such device
wlp12s0: Failed to initialize driver interface
Don't know when it started happening; ran into the separate issue that my wifi connection has started dying randomly and needs a reboot to fix, and when I rebooted it wouldn't come back up.
Edit: Can also confirm that downgrading wpa_supplicant to 2.0-4 (the previous version i had in my cache) fixed it.

Hi!! I have same problem since that the 2.1-3 version of wpa_supplicant was released.
The solution was to change wpa_supplicant 2.1-3 to the 2.0-4 version after every full system upgrade. But now I read your post and see a error in nl80211 driver, I attempted to update wpa_supplicant to the 2.1-3 version one more time, but using the wext driver for the wpa_supplicant connection.
it's working!!
I guess that this is wpa_supplicant problem, not dhcpcd.

Worked with wext driver till kernel update linux (3.14.6-1 -> 3.15.1-1).
all you get now is:
# systemctl status wlanetwork
● wlanetwork.service - Network Connectivity
Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/wlanetwork.service; enabled)
Active: inactive (dead)
systemd[1]: Job sys-subsystem-net-devices-enp2s0.device/start timed out.
systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device sys-subsystem-net-devices-enp2s0.device.
systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Network Connectivity.
even the wlan controller is detected:
02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller (rev 22)
an no wlan... again!
Using the lts-kernel 3.10.44-1 everything works fine again.
Solution for this issue can be found here.
