Radeon dpm, annoying fan speed change

Hello folks,

I'm controlling my ATI graphics card with the open source driver and dpm.

Everytime I do something that changes a huge area of the display, the fan of my card speeds up somewhat and then slows down again.
And by "everytime", I mean even when I'm scrolling a web page or something. This is extremely annoying.

I couldn't find anything on the internet about this. Why does this happen? I assume fan speed increase is connected to raise of temperature.

Is there any possibility to change this?

Re: Radeon dpm, annoying fan speed change

It does that to keep your GPU from overheating. You're probably using a window manager/desktop env with a fancy compositor that goes through OpenGL. That's using your GPU to push textures around on the screen so dpm clocks up the chip and spins up the fan to do the work, then drops back down to save power when its done.

I don't think there's a way to tell it to "Shut up and just overheat" but you could try changing the dpm state and performance level like it says on the wiki... https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … management
