[SOLVED] Alps touchpad jumpy, keyboard misses keypresses.

Hi, I recently installed Arch on a Dell Latitude D620 with an Alps touchpad.  What started out as the occasional missed keypress and small pointer lag has become, over the course of several reboots, so bad that I can no longer log into the machine.  The touchpad is extremely erratic and the keyboard drops keypresses every few moments.  From what I've Googled, the problem seems to be either an IRQ conflict between the keyboard and touchpad or a driver problem with the Alps, or maybe both, but none of the fixes I've tried so far worked:

On the kernel command line:
i8042.direct=1 (causes the alps to stop working)
i8042.nomux=1 (makes the problem much worse)
i8042.noaux=1 (also kills the alps)

Various small, probing changes to the 50-synaptics.conf file which have had no effect.

These problems weren't present during the install, but are now, oddly, appearing even while editing in the bootloader.  The issues were also present in a previous install of Mint, but not as severely.
I'll try to log in a few more times, and if I manage I'll post output for anything asked.

After another hour of dead ends, I gave in and put Xubuntu on it.  Interestingly, Xubuntu fixes this by bypassing the Alps/i8042 drivers entirely and just using generic ones.  Mystery solved.
