I'm running Arch on an Acer Aspire One netbook with Gnome, and have two Pulseaudio outputs at any given time in the Audio control panel: Analog Output and Speakers/Headphones. Speakers/Headphones is a single entry that changes its name based on what's plugged in, but Analog Output is a duplicate when using headphones and silent when using speakers. The problem is that when the headphones are unplugged after several minutes, Pulseaudio wrongly selects Analog Output as the output, preventing playback, and I have to manually select Speakers in the settings dialog OR plug/unplug the headphones again, which causes it to select Speakers automatically. This only happens after several minutes of being plugged in. It doesn't seem to be tied to the ATI HDMI output, because with that disabled (via kernel command line) it still appears, and I can't find any info on it in the Wiki or on Google. In the past I've rampaged through the settings, changing card order via modprobe.conf and modifying different config files, and nothing worked.. here's the output of various commands:

I'll respond quickly and with any output requested.
EDIT: This problem does not occur under Ubuntu or Fedora, but has occurred under Arch for as long as I've used it -- the past several years.
EDIT: There is a counterpart to this under the Input tab, with "Analog Input" vs "Internal Microphone." Internal Microphone works normally, but Analog Input also picks up application output.

The solution seems to be setting a default sink port in /etc/pulse/default.pa with:
set-sink-port alsa_output.pci-0000_00_14.2.analog-stereo analog-output-speakeras described in this post, substituting sink and port with the output of "pacmd list-sinks".
