Sound problems with the cd player

Hello All,

I would like to play a music cd. All the gear works in Debian so we know the hardware is ok.

The first issue is that I am told by "cd player" that I do not seem to have permission to open /dev/cdrom. I am in the audio group as well as the optical and wheel groups.

The real problem it seems to me is that  /dev/cdrom is owned by root and the group is also root even though it is just a pointer to /dev/hdc which has a group set to "optical."

Issue number two is that if root plays the "cd player" in the menu he can get it started but the player claims a known good music cd is "blank."

This is all from a fresh install of "noodle." (0.7.1) and I use xfce4. I followed every step in the wiki.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards, Joe

Re: Sound problems with the cd player

this doesn't really answer much of your question, but symlinks always show up with root:root ownership. basically, ignore the permissions of a symlink, they don't apply. symlinks always actually work with the permissions of the file they are linking.

think of it this way. you have a file with very restrictive permissions. you can't make a symlink that gives more permissions than that, it could compromise your security.

I got the stock cd player to work finally, but I am not sure what did it, as I had moved on to other things and just tried it once more this morning when it started working. It is possible that something happened in the re-boot.

Thanks to everyone for their ideas.

One quick question, however. How do you get xmms to play a cd? All I get is a playlist editor. I just want to pop a cd in the drive and hear music.

Thanks.

Re: Sound problems with the cd player

the reboot might have fixed it because you actually have to log off and log back on for group changes to take effect.

i think you have to right-click on xmms and find the option to play a CD. i haven't used it in so long, so i'm sorry i can't be of more help.
