Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

@acidicX: I can confirm this. I spoke to the mdm developers and they mentioned a few bug reports from Arch and FreeBSD users. They test mdm against Ubuntu 14.xx, so I suppose someone from the arch community shall provide the patch.

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

I've given Cinnamon 2.2 a bit more usage and it seems a little slower than 2.0.

But keyboard applet not working

I'll have a look into this later. I have to study now (after spending most of today fixing stuff and building kernels roll)

OK, so as of the latest updates, the keyboard applet works for me.

Does anyone notice that the XOrg process is taking very high CPU usage when in lock screen? In my case it is taking up to 50% when viewed in top. Cinnamon process is also taking higher than normal CPU usage when not under lock screen (about 10%), I think this is a very serious issue for laptops, as it consumes large amount of battery power when idle under lock screen.

Ah, so that's why my CPU history was showing 50% after a un-locked my screen.

Short update: I've made sure that X and mdm are functional. X seems to be OK, but if I load the "cinnamon-session-cinnamon" via .xinitrc and start the X server with "startx", I get a working cinnamon desktop.
If I login via mdm I still get nothing. I then tried to remove the /etc/mdm/custom.conf - still no login possible with mdm (grey screen). But at least I now know the broken package.

Can anybody confirm this? I'm using the package mdm-display-manager from AUR.

I'm also using mdm-display-manager, and Cinnamon's working just fine here.

Do you have your system fully updated? I can experience the problem with mdm as well.

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

For what it's worth I have found that downgrading upower will break the new version of gdm.  Perhaps these people having problems are actually using gdm even though they think they are using mdm.  Once I upgraded upower again, gdm began to work without issue.  In any event - some of the bugs with cinnamon have been resolved, but things are still pretty messy.  At least Gnome is working reasonably well, with the exception of docky going bye bye from time to time.

Hmm... So I've just looked and the only thing that is out of date is mdm-display-manager, which I have at version 1.5.1-2, not 1.5.1-3. I'll update it now and see what happens. That aside, everythings up-to-date.

EDIT: OK, so I've updated mdm-display-manager, rebooted and everythings still working.

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

So I can confirm that everything works fine here after the recent round of updates. The one exception being suspend on lid close, though I suspect this may be related to the upower problem. Is anyone able to suspend their laptop by closing the lid?

EDIT: ok so I was right. the suspend problem is due to upower. Downgrading to upower 0.9.23-2 allows me to set systemd to suspend on lid close. I still can't get this functionality by setting the correct keys under org.cinnamon.settings-daemon.plugins.power though. I hope having an older version of upower won't cause breakage too soon.

It's not just a little bit slow, I think it is quit slower than 2.0.

And thank you for confirming this, it's been bugging me for quite a while now. Really a big problem for things running on batteries.

I think Cinnamon 2.0 release was much more awesome than this, I am a little disappointed.

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

Well, "technically" Cinnamon developers have until the release of Linux Mint 17 to polish things, maybe it's not high priority to them if Cinnamon 2.2 is buggy right now.

I can confirm the same situation. Thanks for your workaround. At least I could have a working DE temporarily until mdm's maintainer do something.

Same here !

No mdm error message found, but it seems that's not only cinnamon , nothing can launch from mdm.

Using LXDM so not affected by the MDM issues, but I'm still stuck with a US keyboard (rather than UK).

This is with cinnamon 2.2.3-3

Anyone else still have the keyboard issue?

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

After the recent updates, everything except battery (due to upower) is working again.

I've not noticed any discernable performance difference between Cinnamon 2.0 and 2.2. I have noticed that my laptop is running ~3 degrees Celsius cooler while doing usual web browsing/programming tasks.

At this point, I'm sure it's not MDM specifically causing the problem, but I'm not sure where to start.  It's also not cinnamon, as far as I can see, so what else is in the upgrade that would interact with mdm?

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

Still not working here.

I have deleted
~/.config/cinnamon*
~/.local/share/cinnamon*
~/.cinnamon

started cinnamon through gdm

since nemo "background" is taking a few to load
I click nemo in the bottom bar and
1. the nemo background window loads immediately
2. the actualy nemo window flashes shortly and disappears.

the same as in 2. happens with EVERY window opened, chromium, firefox, gedit, anything.
using nvidia proprietary
no problems on my laptop (kernel radeon)
no problems in gnome

I'm "forced" to use gnome and I hate it

Is anyone else having the same problem with windows flashing and not being rendered?
This is happening since the upgrade to 2.2

I don't know what else I could remove/empty to have a clean cinnamon state.

I also have the grey screen MDM issue, even when logging into a different DE such as Gnome.

At this point, I'm sure it's not MDM specifically causing the problem, but I'm not sure where to start.  It's also not cinnamon, as far as I can see, so what else is in the upgrade that would interact with mdm?

I came to the same conclusion, I guess it's some of the gnome dependencies (gnome-common, gnome-desktop, ...) - they got a bump to 3.12.

Why did cinnamon 2.2 get pushed into the repo? It clearly was and is not stable enough. I've had several issues on my laptop, the upower bug, cinnamon's XRANDR settings app not working properly...
LM17 is far from released, and they are the main devs for cinnamon... In future, it would be great if major cinnamon updates would only be released after they are tested. I still appreciate the good job during yesterday of course, there were some really quick fixes!

Anyone else having problems with window list applets? I've tried every one in here and cannot get window list...

It wasn't the Cinnamon maintainer that bumped them, it was the GNOME 3.12 maintainer... Read #179 of this thread (about a quarter of way the down on the page).

Also, you are using ArchLinux. You should expect stuff to break once in a while.

I'll have a look now.

EDIT: The default one packaged with Cinnamon works fine here.

Re: [Cinnamon] Issues after update to Cinnamon 2.2 and GTK 3.12

Alright, I'll whine on in the other thread then ;-)
One of my reasons for using arch was to be more involved and testing/helping to fix stuff faster upstream. I have absolutely no problem if smaller stuff breaks or I have to do a rollback or with writing bug reports.
But breaking the whole DE and a window-manager and deploying a new DE in a 'beta' state for all users, which it will be for probably another month or so... it really is a bit whine-worthy don't you think? ;-)

Ok, in case anyone had the same problem like me with the invisible windows here is my solution:

I did reset all the desktop-effects settings in dconf-editor in org->cinnamon to the default values, now the windows are visible again on start.
