Online recovery from harddrive reconnect

I'm running ArchLinux on an external hard drive that I carry around. That works pretty well, except when used on a laptop. Due to the nature of a laptop, the cable connection to the USB drive might break from time to time (due to me being clumsy at times ;-)). Anyway, when that happens, the whole system is essentially dead, even when immediately reconnecting the drive. The only thing left to do is cold boot the machine.

Is there any solution that might "harden" the kernel and userspace against temporary HDD disconnects? (Most important is probably an immediate re-mount of /) (Running the whole system from a RAM disk might work, but I usually can't spare the necessary memory.)

There are probably solutions around, but I apparently use the wrong search terms. In that regard: sorry if that problem has been discussed before.
