No sound on hda-intel after kernel update from 3.11.6-1 to 3.14.1-1

Hi,

It looks like a few people have audio prolems following last kernel updates.
Yesterday I updated my arch (6 months old) and now I have no soundcard
After hours and hours of forum reading and tries, I am now kindly asking your help

dmesg | grep hda

[    7.664189] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[ 7.664314] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: irq 42 for MSI/MSI-X
[ 7.766374] hda-intel 0000:00:1b.0: no codecs initialized

Re: No sound on hda-intel after kernel update from 3.11.6-1 to 3.14.1-1

They are currently reworking the hda sound driver to be more generic. That would reduce duplication and thus maintainance burden.

Could you check if it worked with any of the previous kernels? (3.13 might be a good start, then 3.12).

Re: No sound on hda-intel after kernel update from 3.11.6-1 to 3.14.1-1

Can you please confirm the easiest way to downgrade the kernell is to download it here :
http://seblu.net/a/arm/packages/l/linux/

and run
pacman -U linux-3.13.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz linux-hearders-3.13.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

will i break dependencies ?

Re: No sound on hda-intel after kernel update from 3.11.6-1 to 3.14.1-1

No, kernel downgrades should be no problem as a general rule. Unless something is depending on a very new feature. You could think of systemD and Xorg and such. But this is not the case. Unsupported features will be disabled / enabled without trouble.

However, that is the main rule. Pacman should warn you of any dependency trouble btw.

Re: No sound on hda-intel after kernel update from 3.11.6-1 to 3.14.1-1

I tried downgrading to linux-3.14-4 , sound still not working (forgot to look for /proc/config.gz options)
Then I simply tried to come back to my previous kernel 3.11.6-1 with

cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
sudo pacman -U linux-3.11.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz linux-headers-3.11.6-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

and sound is back ...

please see below the output information for 3.11.6-1 . What did they change in the new kernell that break my sound ?
I will try to find the starting to fail kernell version using dichotomy search

dmesg | grep hda

[    8.721074] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[ 8.721228] snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: irq 42 for MSI/MSI-X

result of  alsa-info.sh :
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=79840 … ec05ade145

zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_SND_HDA :

Re: No sound on hda-intel after kernel update from 3.11.6-1 to 3.14.1-1

I'm not sure if you made a typo or not.

Our suggestion was to try different major kernel versions between v3.11 and v3.14. So, that would be v3.13 and v3.12.

If v3.11 and v3.14 work, then every version should work in between dependency wise (apart from any resolved regressions).

Re: No sound on hda-intel after kernel update from 3.11.6-1 to 3.14.1-1

I said :
3.14.1-1 : no sound
3.14-4 : no sound
3.11.6 : sound working
I will try 3.12 and 3.13 tonight (however result could differ depending subversion as compiled options are changed between them, that's why I may have a lot more versions to test than just 3.12 and 3.13 to identify exactly when it started to fail)

Re: No sound on hda-intel after kernel update from 3.11.6-1 to 3.14.1-1

On my machine issues with audio devices are also fixed by downgrading to 3.13.8-1-ARCH...
