Hej,
I spent now several hours setting up a network printer - Canon iR-ADV C5235. I tried the driver from the AUR (cndrvcups-lb) and also the official ppd files from the Canon website.
In the first case the printer only prints one page with:
**** Unable to open the initial device, quitting
In the second case, nothing happens at all.
I googled, that the first error has something to do with ghostscript, but I really have no idea how to fix it.
Has someone any suggestions?

Have you tried the drivers from the Canon support center?
http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0011096.asp
CQue is recommended but UFRII can work better in some cases.
You can download the manual for the iR ADV C5235i from that page as well.
Disclosure: I haven't tested any of those drivers as I don't own a Canon and at work we use them on Windows (I know, I know...)
[ Edit: don't forget to select the OS at the top ;-) ]

Yes, I have tried both drivers from the Canon website. Unfortunately, without any success.

masala, have you tried the cndrvcups-lb-bin package ?
Other users with that same error had success using the binary version.

With the driver of the cndrvcups-lb-bin package the printer prints no page at all.
At jobs it stucks in the "Connected to printer" status.

Then i can only advise you to do the same thing i did a while ago :
My canon printer (capt driver) had worked flawlessly with archlinux for about 3 months, then suddenly it failed.
I tried to get it back to work, but even going back to a snapshot from the period it did work didn't help.
I sold it to someone that liked windows 8 and would never contemplate switching to linux, and they are still very happy with the printer.
I bought a new printer that does have a good opensource driver (AFTER i confirmed with openprinting.org there was a well working opensource driver for this printer).
If you do want to stick with the canon printer & linux , i suggest you switch to ubuntu, debian, Fedora or Red Hat.
If you run a 'supported' distro canon tech support will try to help solving problems, as soon as they hear archlinux they just close your ticket.

You could see if Turboprint covers your printer http://www.turboprint.info/

@Lone_Wolf: Changing the printer is not an option, because it is not mine (it belongs to university). I really don't want to change my Linux distro because of this driver issue.
@whompus: Turboprint doesn't list my printer (Canon iR-ADV C5235) as supported.

masala,
i assume this one is setup as a network printer ?
If so, you could try to ask permission to connect directly to it over usb to test if it works that way.
(sometimes that does happen with canon printers : 1 of of local / ethernet works, but not both)
Other then that, the only workaround i can think of is to do the printing from a machine with an OS where the printer works.
You could try setting up a VM on your system for that purpose.

The specs page for the printer says it supports PCL 5c/6. Might be worth trying to add it as a generic pcl printer and see what happens. I've never used it myself, though, so I've no idea how well it actually works.

@Knasher: Great hint. The PCL 5c driver works, but only for grayscale printing. However, the generic PostScript driver supports color and duplex printing.
It is not the perfect solution (because some functions as the stapler are not supported), but it will work for me.
Thanks.

You can use the ppd file from the Canon driver, for me the German version of the driver was found at http://www.canon.at/support/products/im … 20(64-bit)
However, note that you need the libpng12 package for the driver to work. Which you only find out when running the setup executable found in the driver.
