Briefly:
ATI Radeon 3000 GPU, Realtek ALC889 audio, Samsung series 5 LED TV.
The computer is a duel-boot Arch/Debian The DVI port on the computer is connected to an HMDI port on the TV with an adaptor. The line-out jack connects to the TV as well. I hear the sound from Debian but not Arch. I have verified that an analog signal is leaving the line-out jack (I can hear it using headphones or by connecting to PC speakers).
Analog is analog. Yet the TV won't interpret it from my Arch install. I began to suspect that my DVI output might be "telling" my TV that the sound isn't analog.
The Debian boot uses the catalyst driver and the Arch boot uses xf86-video-ati.
Am I barking up the wrong tree? How should I proceed?

Yes, I was barking up the right tree. I installed catalyst and it works now.
