[SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

I've seemingly spent forever trying to diagnose this new LaTeX update and the problems it causes. Attempting to use the latex command gives:

latex Thesis.tex

texhash: Done.

Is there some fundamental thing that I'm missing? I did my install according to the alternative install in the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Te … rk_install

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Try and see if there are any pac* files on the system in accordance with: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … c.2A_Files

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

@laptop~ $ sudo find /etc -regextype posix-extended -regex ".+\.pac(new|save|orig)" 2> /dev/null
@laptop~ $ find / -regextype posix-extended -regex ".+\.pac(new|save|orig)" 2> /dev/null
/boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg.pacnew

Seems unrelated to TeX. Reinstalling the TeX file tree (/usr/local/texlive) via tlmgr didn't seem to help either.

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

Bear with me, I am still gathering information.  First, is your system fully up to date ( pacman -Syu ) ?
What texlive packages and versions have you installed?  pacman -Qs texlive

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

ewaller, I realized the OP used an alternate route other than pacman to install tex.  So pacman should not show any of it installed (AFAIK).  This is when I realized I couldn't help as I let pacman manage my tex installation - and I have had no issues whatsoever.

I know CFR is an experienced texer who uses a local installation - but I haven't seen CFR active on the forums in a while.

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

Yes the system is up to date (barring a couple AUR programs like Dropbox).

@laptop~ $ pacaur -Qs texlive
local/texlive-bin 2013.30973-10
    TeX Live binaries

I don't have texlive-most or anything like that due to the alternate installation mechanism. To get the installed packages, I run:

@laptop~ $ tlmgr info --list > txt

Packages that are installed have an "i" next to them.

Edit: Maybe worthwhile to abandon local and use texlive via the repos?

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

I know *absolutely* nothing about the pros/cons of using a tlmgr to manage a tex install - nor do I know how using tlmgr is to be done properly.  But the missing file the errors are reporting does belong to texlive-core,  which you don't have installed (via pacman at least).

I have been using latex for quite some time for all document/presentation preparation, and I haven't had a single issue allowing pacman to manage it.  Our devs/packagers are really on top of things.  But whether I'd suggest you change has to be tempered by my ignorance at two levels: 1) depending on the devs I occasionally realize how little I know about actually properly maintaining a tex installation - this is knowledge (that if there were 48 hours in a day) I would value having; and 2) I don't know if there would be subtle adjustments in 'workflow' needed to transition from a tlmgr to pacman managed tex system.

EDIT: if you want to give a shot at keeping the current installation method, perhaps you could revise your title to indicate this is a local/tlmgr tex system.  That might attract the attention of the right flavor of tex-geeks.

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

Could you be more specific so as to how you installed texlive in the first place? Did you use the install-tl script? If so, why does pacaur indicate you have the texlive-bin package installed? If not, how did you get tlmgr, which is not part of texlive-bin?

If you have two sets of TeX binaries, then the installation won't work (see e.g. http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2htm … rmatstymy).

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

I did use the install-tl script to get tlmgr, but as for why I have the texlive-bin via pacaur, I've no idea. Maybe it was from a previous attempt some time ago?

I ended up switching to the repos instead of using tlmgr, though interestingly, it threw a fmtutil error after that install as well...

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

Okay, try to remove the texlive-bin package and then run 'fmtutil-sys --all'.

@Trilby: I'd say the most important advantage of using tlmgr over pacman is that it gives you much finer control over which texlive packages you have installed. Texlive provides packages and collections of packages, and the pacman packages correspond to texlive collections. My current texlive setup is 72MB, whereas my older pacman setup was over 800MB (to be fair, I wasn't being very careful: I installed the 486MB texlive-fontsextra package just to get dsfont, but even texlive-core is 267MB).

Re: [SOLVED] Local TeX Install Issues

That was the problem!

My guess is that the two didn't interfere with one another until some update. Uninstalling texlive-bin was the key. Thanks all.
