[SOLVED] Frozen system on login with CK patched kernel

Hi, on a fresh Arch install (noX) on a Samsung NP535 laptop, every time I try to boot into a CK patched kernel, the initramfs is fine but on login at TTY1 my system freezes and becomes totally unresponsive shortly after starting to enter the username.  Sometimes a minute or so later there will be a few seconds of responsiveness and a splurge of output from the intermediate keypresses, but then total lockup for longer than my patience, needing a hard reboot.  No problem with the vanilla 3.14.4 kernel.

This occurs on a CK kernel compiled from the AUR with standard makepkg.conf and either generic or CPU specific nconfig option, and also on packages directly from repo-ck (either generic or cpu specific), and the archived 3.13.11 versions.

I have no nvidia or broadcom hardware nor virtualbox so have not installed those ck specific packages.

This may be a redherring and may or may not be related but the only problem I have on the vanilla kernel is although the system will 100% successfully hibernate and resume to/from disk, it will only resume from RAM suspend with the screen powered down.  I can type blind eg

systemctl reboot

and it will respond appropriately.  I have tried all the pm-utils quirks, compiled a fixed DSDT table into the kernel, unloaded all possible modules and ssh'd into the blank machine with all sorts of setterm commands without being able to get the screen powered up.  I know it's capable because it will resume from hibernate just fine.  The only strange thing I found was that in /sys/class/backlight there are both acpi_video0 and radeon_bl0 symlinks (which both successfully control the backlight albeit with different max_brightness values) and systemctl has two services systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service and systemd-backlight@backlight:radeon_bl10.service, which I've tried masking individually.  Here's an lspci -v if it helps:

Re: [SOLVED] Frozen system on login with CK patched kernel

You should post to ck's blog as he might be able to help.  Could be a race condition that only manifests under bfs or a bug with bfs itself.  The latter is doubtful in my experience.  Running ck1 here just fine.

Re: [SOLVED] Frozen system on login with CK patched kernel

Thanks for the pointer Graysky - I've found the race condition was being caused by the ath9k wireless kernel module.  Blacklisting it gets everything CK working but without wireless.  I'll mark this thread as solved as I appreciate this is not a mainline kernel issue, but if there are any more pointers how to get wireless working with the CK1 patchset I'd appreciate them!

Re: [SOLVED] Frozen system on login with CK patched kernel

I recommend emailing ck privately so that if it is a problem his is code, it will get corrected.
