is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … px=MTYyNzQ

According to the webpage above, Chrome 35 seems like having no dependency on GTK2 anymore. But in Archlinux repo, I can see gtk2 is still there.
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … /chromium/

Any reasons?

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

EDIT

35.0.1916.17 is a last version of chromium with GTK toolkit.
36.0.1941.0 is a first version with only aura toolkit

35.0.1916.114 is still with GTK

if you want use only* aura in 35 series, needs add -Duse_aura=1 in configure flags  *(i don't remember if this is all correct)

EDIT2: damm versions xd

I just got the update. Why does it look different for me? It looks very flat and I don't seem to be getting the systray icon as well. It looks very aura to me. The hangouts chat windows from the extension shows they are part of X windows drawn instead of part of Chromium in KDE.

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

Version 35.0.1916.114 seems to have massive rendering issues for me, to the point of windows flickering and overlapping here and there... it's very close to be unusable. Not sure what the real reason is, but it looks very different from before, and definitely doesn't work 100% properly.

Update: google-chrome-dev 36.0.1985.18-1, the unstable, seems to not display those rendering problems. Can't vouch for the overall stability, as I haven't tested it under any kind of stress, but everything seems to work pretty well, and actually, quite a lot faster than before. That said, 35.0.1916.114 is definitely broken to the point of not being usable, for the me. I'll hope for a quick update, and use the unstable version for now.

The only version in extra is "chromium", and the 35.0.1916.114 gives me the same exact problems for both flavours (Chromium and Google-Chrome). I have the feeling that it's a somewhat transitional version, between GTK and Aura, and something is, at least on my system, very broken. I have it overlapping the panel, hiding the systray icons making them all disappear, flash content is drawn over the desktop, and pages are flickering in and out of existence. And let's not even start with the tooltips and dropdown menus (like the address bar one). The -dev version does not display any of those problems, which is encouraging, meaning that it's just a transitional problem that should be solved at the next update.

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

I can confirm that the Chromium system tray icon doesn't show up after updating to 35.  I have the hangouts extension installed (which runs in the background), yet even after opening Chromium no icon appears.  Stranger still, the option in the extension's settings to run hangouts in the background has disappeared.  Chromium does appear in my processes list even when the window is closed, so it is running in the background, but its icon doesn't show and hangouts doesn't run.  Typing "chromium --no-startup-window" into a terminal opens a regular window.  I downgraded back to 34 and had no problems.

As has been pointed out in other threads, Chromium no longer supports Netscape-style plugins. This means that the Java web plugin, the stand alone flash plugin, and anything else that uses the old style plugin interface will not work.

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

The new menus are hideous. There is so much padding between menu entries.. My bookmarks list is like 1/3 longer than it needs to be, making me have to scroll to see it all. This is a "feature" that I was happy to escape when I migrated from Windows to Linux, but it appears now I must stare it in the face again.

The popup menus leave behind boxes on my desktop if they happen to spread out past the Chrome window.

I don't like it at all.

Change browsing habits, avoiding plugin-based content. If not, change browser. There's nothing to fix, NPAPI support is a no-go on chrome -and probably on all blink browsers-

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

While I don't really buy the new "menu design", it won't bother me that much. Google Chrome 36 (-dev-unstable) is working very well for me, and the feeling is of it already being pretty stable and quite fast(er) as well. That said, the font are, again, ridiculous... the address bar font is way too large than needed, and as usual, there seems to be no way of fixing that.

Does anybody know if there is any way of forcing that to a less intrusive dimension? The Tab font are a bit too small as well, but I could easily live with that...

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

So, it is hard-coded into the source code and it isn't at all dependent on the system font settings?

I admit I don't know how to edit the source code of an AUR package at all, even though one could always learn, I suppose smile

Thanks for finding this!  This morning when I upgraded, I was frantically Googling my issues and I couldn't find a thing.  I thought I was going crazy tongue .  I'm also using Cinnamon and seeing the same things as the OP in your link, and it's nice to see that I'm not alone.

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

Has anyone found out how to change the icon set? Chromium used to use my default GTK icon theme. But now it seems to use Faenza fallback and I cannot find an option to change it.

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

Since upgrading to 35, i found all problems described above (tray icon, font too large in omnibar, etc.) And this one here which makes the browser completely unusable: Umlaute like 'ä, ö, ü' are displayed correctly on pages; but it is not possible to enter them in the omnibar or in any <INPUT> field. Example:

  Type: ä ö ü
  Display: ';[

It's really a chromium releated problem. It worked in 34 and it works in all other programs.

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

Going to downgrade to 34.
This thing is lagging as hell while scrolling complex webpages.
Another thing is that depsite having:
"Video Decode: Hardware accelerated" and "Video: Hardware accelerated" in chrome://gpu
Watching videos on youtube makes cpu going to 99% at 1080p.
This is on nvidia.

EDIT:
What does it means now "GTK theme" under  chrome://settings?
bah...

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

After upgrading to chromium 35 I've had lots of rendering issues (window flickering, tabs overlapping, completely black areas). The browser was pretty much unusable. However, I managed to get rid of most of them by enabling GPU acceleration from chrome://flags (PS: I'm using the Intel open source driver).

Hopefully this helps someone having the same issues.

Re: is Chrome 35 gtk-free?

I upgraded to Chromium 36 today and it still doesn't show up in my system tray when it's running in the background (I'm using Cinnamon).  Does it work for anyone else?
