Assigning video card

I have a strange issue I am attempting to get to the bottom of.  In an effort to use XEN with a XBMC domu I needed to add a video card.

My system has onboard video and I added a PCI Matrox G450 video card.  I know it is an old crappy card, but for my purpose, to use XBMC only for music, it seemed enough.  However, the lack of drivers, sky rocket the CPU and that experiment ended.

At this point I was thinking it was time to just get a new cheap PCI-e card instead, but thought first why dont I just pass-through the on-board video and use the add-in card for console access.  I edited my pciback, updated grub and rebooted to a blank screen.  I then thought to check the BIOS and make sure the video card setting was right.  The are 2 settings, Auto and onboard/card which states the a PCI-e card will be selected over the onboard.  Auto states add-on card and seems to be the solution I need.

It was here that things got weird.  With the BIOS on auto, I rebooted the system, during post, everything is coming through the add-on card, but then once Arch boots, the video goes blank.  However, if I flip over to the onboard video, it is displaying the login dialog.  Even with PCI Back in place, telling the system to hide the on board video from the system, it does not.

Is this because Arch does not have a driver for my Matrox card, so it flips to using a different card.  Why is the on board video card not actually hidden from my Dom0.  Is what I want even possible or should I just stop screwing around and just buy a cheapo PCIe card to see if that fixes it, my only concern then would be if Arch still did not pick the right card.

Thanks
