Font issue

Something weird:
I changed all my font settings (in gnome-control-center, gtkrc-2.0, switch2..) to the very same font: Tahoma 11px. It works, even without the gnome-settings-daemon! But: without the gnome-settings-daemon, whenever a menu item letter is underlined, it gets too close to the next letter:

I really don't want to use the gnome-settings-daemon, since it messes up lots of stuff (background, cursor and more).
What I need is a clever way to fix this oddness..

this seems to be a Xorg7 issue. Just downgraded (ati issues again..), fonts look fine.
