LINES & COLUMNS variables and appearance of text program

By default there is such line in /etc/profile:

export LINES COLUMNS

Unfortunately this makes that when I use nano in konsole or xterm (under KDE) it fits the window size and when I maximize the konsole window nano stays with its old size (I mean it doesn't fit the new window size) what is quite irritating. So I removed that line. Now, when I change the size of the konsole window nano fits to the new dimensions. The problem is that now pacman looks like this during downloading:

Process bar doesn't display in one line but in new line when the percent state has changed.
Is it possible to configure that variables in such way that it work well also with pacman and with nano?

Re: LINES & COLUMNS variables and appearance of text program

type 'reset' and that usually fixes any display problems in the console.
