XCOM: Enemy Unknown Steamversion not running due to driver issues

Hello
I had problems with the OpenGL rendering error message on Steam, but searched for solutions and removing a library (I sadly dont recall which exactly) I got rid of the error message. XCOM itself isnt working though, but atleast Fistful of Frags ran without a problem

From starting Steam in Konsole until starting the game it outputs the following

As far as I see the r600 drivers cannot be loaded due to "x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.20' not found". I tried removing the libraries recommended on the threads of other users with that problem but it only removed the Steam error message not the problem and stupidly copying commands which removed some libraries probably did more damaged than it fixed.

I'd really appreciate help, this is my first time admitting defeat and having to ask on the forums...

Cobbling together some of the messages, it seems that you need to install some 32 bit libs.

No, that is Steam itself with its ingame overlay. Well, maybe he has to turnoff the overlay. But XCOM itself is 64bit only.

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Steamversion not running due to driver issues

The whole idea of an 'overlay' makes me nervous. Is that  a steam powered chroot or something? (eek...)

Anyway, it looks like it's loading your native system libs (required by /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/r600_dri.so). Furthermore, if it would be a genuine chroot, it should provide it's own glibc (I guess).

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Steamversion not running due to driver issues

The overlay is already turned off in the settings, and other games work fine with it turned on, never encountered problems in that regard, so I dont think thats the problem. What 32 bit libs should I (re)install to be safe and to possibly rule that out or fix it?

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Steamversion not running due to driver issues

All I can say is, that I can play it on my Radeon HD 7870 with Catalyst 14.6b. Maybe the open-source-driver isn't enough atm to play the game. Or maybe someone who uses the open-source-drivers could confirm this.

Works for me using the open source drivers with a Radeon HD 5670.

Try this:

rm /home/florian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1
rm /home/florian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6

Then load the game again and see if it works.

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Steamversion not running due to driver issues

Hi, I had also troubles with XCOM.
Errors about libraries (libpng, zlib, ..), X server errors, etc.
I've tried removing these libraries from "~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/..", and reinstalling system libraries…
Also I've found some configuration hints, like "LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" %command%" option for the game itself in steam, so the system libraries will be used…
Or I've found in some thread that it might be caused by locales configuration, this should fix it: "LC_ALL=C steam"
Nothing from this worked sad

So the last resort:
rm ~/.local/share/Steam
rm ~/.steam

And voila, it works now, I can play the game smile The steam interface changed a little bit as well…

Maybe it helps you.

(btw, openxcom FTW! big_smile)

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Steamversion not running due to driver issues

Okay I now feel stupid:

rm /home/florian/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6

fixed it for me, although I think I tried that multiple times and removed tons of libraries

Well thanks for the help, my weekend is saved big_smile

Could you tell us, how it performs with the open-source driver?

Glad you got it working. It's a nice game.

I haven't played it much yet but it seems to work fine so far, everything is smooth and I can't see any glitches. The driver isn't as fast as on windows but they've come a long way.

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Steamversion not running due to driver issues

Haven't encountered any problems so far after about 4 hours of playing, the controls feel a bit weird but as far as I remember it has always been like that in XCOM. And it doesnt need a top notch FPS rate, the one Im getting on my 3,4 GHz quadcore and a Radeon HD 5770 is definitly sufficient.
