ntfs no fail option no longer respected.

I've been using the nofail option in fstab to automatically mount external partitions when they are present and ignore them if they are missing but recently this stopped working.
Now the boot process waits a minute and a half for each missing disk. How can I restore the previous behavior of silently ignoring missing disks on boot and automatically mounting the partitions when the disks are plugged in?
