Trouble starting X window

Fresh install of Arch (after much head banging :>), followed the guide from start to finish (EFI install) but after installing xorg I can't start it.

Adapter

04:03.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Electronics Systems Ltd. MGA G200eW WPCM450 (rev 0a)

I've tried both MGA drivers

I installed xorg-server, server-utils and xinit

I can't find a xorg conf file, the two files in xorg.conf.d are 10-evdev.conf & 10-quirks.conf

Re: Trouble starting X window

You can create xorg.conf yourself if needed.
How exactly are you starting X? Install e.g. vesa drivers to see if it helps you start X.

Re: Trouble starting X window

I'm a complete linux noob (not sure what I'd populate xorg.conf with), probably shouldn't have started with Arch but too late :>
using startx to start X, previously had GDM installed but it was hanging during boot (nothing in journalctl that I could see, just appeared to get so far and do nothing)
Have not tried the vesa drivers, will check them now.
Thanks

Re: Trouble starting X window

X starts with the VESA driver but it does not look pretty.
Will one of the MGA drivers possibly work with the correct config file?

Re: Trouble starting X window

It should work OK with the vesa drivers, can you post the output of startx with them installed.

Can you also post the contents of your ~/.xinitrc so we can see what DE you're trying to launch.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

(EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

Haven't even installed a DE, I was going to install Gnome once I'd gotten X up and running. I have had a few previous failed attempts at installing, the first was due to me not setting up the EFI partition correctly, the second was successful but I at the end I installed some xorg packages, xf86-video-mga driver and gnome but on boot it would hang.

e2a: the vesa driver is the only one that actually does anything but sadly all it does is mess up my display tongue

Re: Trouble starting X window

So it works OK with the vesa driver then, it's just erroring out because you don't have the window manager its looking for installed. You can now either install the default basic X environment for further testing or go straight for your WM/DE of choice.

I've no idea why the other drivers aren't working, you'll have to wait for someone more knowledgable to come along.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: Trouble starting X window

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Installation

You can create a ~/.xinitrc instead of using the default / fallback /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.
Never mind, all this is in the link slithery posted.
