For the ugly interface install the breeze theme and in /etc/sddm.conf you must put "Current=breeze"
If you cannot login most probably the sddm.conf file is missing or is not configured fine. Here is my configuration:

Indeed for the ugly interface. Adding the configuration file did it. Thanks!
However, it still did not succeed to launch the kde-plasma5 desktop. Here is the log I get in reverse order:

Not really. That said, I only have the minimum installed to get Plasma 5 Desktop working, not the other KDE bits (because I'm typically a GTK environment person).

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

@Ekaradon

I was checking with my journalctl output, and till the following line:

Nov 13 22:48:19 skynet sddm[599]: Session started

It seems pretty identical.

But then, kdeinit5 fires up, but not for you.
What seems strange, is:

Nov 13 22:48:19 skynet sddm[599]: Auth: sddm-helper exited with 1

And also, who was 650? Because of this line:

Nov 13 22:48:19 skynet systemd[630]: Received SIGRTMIN+24 from PID 650 (kill).

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

Hi,
I have plasma-desktop installed (official, not from aur) with all its deps. Window borders are completely missing (title bar is missing as well). There might be a package missing? I already removed all config files (using a test user, I deleted the whole home dir). Un- and reinstalling all packages did not help as well. I also tried 'kwin_x11 --replace' with no success

Do you have oxygen installed?

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I have now wink that was it, thank you very much!
Weird thing (for me) is, it was installed before... I had the borders but had another problem with bogus EDID info, so I uninstalled plasma some time ago. After solving this and reinstalling plasma, oxygen was not installed. Why is oxygen no dependency of plasma-next or breeze or something?

I do not know whether it is a normal behaviour to have sddm-helper ending in this way?

Nov 14 21:26:26 skynet sddm-helper[971]: [PAM] Ended.

However, you say that you have kdeinit5 firing up and not me. So I should look in this way.
The thing I want to confirm is that the following action:

Nov 14 21:26:26 skynet systemd-logind[280]: Removed session c10.

is done because kde5 is not using the new created session. In the other case, it would mean that my session is crushed by systemd and then it stops kde starting process.

I have found something which seems similar to my issue there:
https://plus.google.com/+StefanGremm/posts/gMAricd3VAW
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/42552

I am going to try again and deleting .Xauthority from my home directory.

EDIT: It did not help. sad

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

Hi I've tried finding bugs on KF5's Icon KCM and the toolbar icon size but no luck so far.

My problem has been that I have to go to kdeglobals to change the toolbar (actually maintoolbar) icon size.

Right clicking on a toolbar and choosing 'Icon Size' only provides the option 'Default' which is tiny (22). The KCM doesn't work as the dropdown menus don't work. So in the end I edited kdeglobals and changed the icon size to 48, which looks decent on my 1080p screen.

Cheers,

P

Hi!

Are there any future plans when Archlinux will move completly to Plasma 5?

What does "move completely to Plasma 5" mean? Plasma 5 is already in [extra], you can install it if you want.

Perhaps Kleinermann9 is referring to the other two parts of KDE 5, that is KDE Frameworks 5 and KDE Applications 5?

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

Well, the Archwiki got an answer for you:

Archwiki wrote:
  • The Frameworks 5 libraries are available in the official repositories as kf5 and kf5-aids.

  • The Plasma 5 workspace is available in the official repositories as plasma-next.

  • Applications based on KF5 will have a first release in December 2014. You may also find various other Frameworks 5 enabled applications in the AUR.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I've just in the past 24 hours installed arch with plasma next on two machines, a desktop box and a laptop. I had some problems with the first install due to bring an idiot and not installing the right display drivers, but other than that I can tell you that so far kde 5.1 works great on a clean installation. Both of these are production machines that get heavy daily use, so I'll be posting about any bugs/problems I encounter and any workarounds I find. Btw this also marks my return to arch after a two year absence; nice to be back!

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

hello Plasma 5 early adopters smile

Could someone that is using Plasma 5 please check if the top menu thing (the one we have in KDE 4, where you push the cursor over the top of the screen and the menubar of the current application appears) is/is not available?

thank you.

Appmenu/Globalmenu?

Looks like it's there, just doesn't work or isn't enabled by default in Plasma 5.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I just installed Arch and KF5 + Plasma 5 + SDDM on an old desktop. I found I also had to manually install Xorg and related packages, as they were not included as dependencies. Is there a reason for that or should this be reported? Very good dependency definition is one of the things I usually appreciate most of Archlinux.

EDIT: I've read some reports (also on the wiki) which suggest to install applications (e.g. Dolphin, Kate) specifically for KF5 from AUR. I've not had problems so far with applications from the official repos, such as Dolphin, Kate, Kwrite and DragonPlayer. They don't require kdebase-workspace to be installed after all, and they seem to work well. Is there something wrong in this?

Nothing at all. In fact, most KF5 apps are still under heavy development and not yet ready for use in production.

I would assume it's because KF5 is not ready for prime-time, and if the dependencies are changes it could lead to problems with other packages right now. But this is only a guess.

Well for a while at least Xorg is going to be a dependency I guess. KDE not going to drop X for a long time.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

KDE4 doesn't have a direct dependency either (in fact none of the DEs do, only some DMs like gdm and lxdm) so maybe its some historical thing, other than that you are supposed to be able to run wayland with these packages somewhere down the line so a direct dependency wouldn't be favorable anyway at most an opt, which wouldn't be automatically installed. And you'd still have to install drivers separately anyway.
