The non-plasma parts (contact list, text ui) should still work in KDE4. If you want the applets, then you'll have to stick with 0.9 (KDE4 applets can't be compiled against KF5 libs)

Thank you very much for the info, I managed to downgrade it to 0.9. (in case someone else needs the list then it can be found at the end of this post)

I have to admit I am not really happy with the situation that a stable upgrade breaks compatibility with KDE4 which is still supported until at least August 2015.
And leaves me with options to either move on to k*5 or downgrade.

OMG thank you so much, I've been racking my brains trying to figure out what happened to my system tray telepathy stuffs.  It's still usable (albeit, no systray icon), so it's not a deal-breaker for me.  Was considering filing a bug with KDE before I thought I'd check this forum, heh.  Thanks for this reply.

The KDE4 desktop will be supported, KDE4 versions of ported applications will not. We are already making a big effort to keep both versions of Plasma in the repositories (most major distros are switching to Plasma 5 in their spring releases and dumping KDE4 completely), maintainig two versions of every application that interacts with the desktop on top of that would be unmanageable.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

I switched to Plasma a few days ago and I'm quite happy + I want to share an experience + improvement:

When using breeze as a QT4 theme (as suggested in the wiki), some applications (owncloud-client, activinspire) look really crappy. (ugly colors, menus and buttons and - in case of inspire - ugly scrollbars)
They look much better when GTK+ is selected in qtconfig-qt4 and in the KDE-settings, the orion theme is set as GTK+ theme. (as suggested in the wiki)
Downside of that is problems with LibreOffice, e.g. white tooltip-text on white tooltip-background. I really searched long how to avoid that, and the solution is: Force LibreOffice to use gtk by starting it with SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk lowriter or making that permanent in /etc/profile.d/libreoffice-fresh.sh as suggested in the wiki.

Maybe that is useful for someone.

Unfortunately not as great as we thought:
The white text on white tooltip problem occurs in okular, too.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

OK, at least for okular, it is possible to start it with

okular --style breeze

but that alone is no real solution...

Edit:
it gets a bit better by editing
/usr/share/applications/kde4/okular.desktop to include

Exec=okular --style breeze %U %i -caption %c

than Okular has the right theme when called by K-Menu.
Do the same with /usr/share/applications/kde4/okularApplication_pdf.desktop
and you get the right theme when opening a pdf.

That's new to me. So basically as more applications gets ported to k*5 the KDE4 will be abandoned/unmaintained.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

As much as I want to like Plasma 5, I can't understand the reasons why other distros are switching to Plasma 5 so soon. I mean, the Ubuntu family, for example, meant for newcomers, is presenting the new Plasma 5 as default... but in my opinion it's not enough stable yet, specially for new users (despite an acceptable performance on my Arch installation). I think that situation could render as a negative side effect for Plasma itself (as people will think that it's too unstable and switch to other DE's).

I found a solution how to apply QT4-style=GTK+ only for some applications: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=196547

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

Hi,

I changed to KF5/Plasma 5 as soon as I could. To make sure that KDE4 applications use the Breeze style and icons you need to keep from your old install (or make if you haven't got it)

/home/<username>/.kde4/share/config/kdeglobals

Edit the sections so that: -

[General]
ColorScheme=Breeze.colors
Name=Breeze.colors
widgetStyle=breeze

and also: -

[Icons]
Theme=breeze

It was so long ago I can't quite remember but I think I just copied my KF5 kdeglobals (/home/<username>./config/kdeglobals) to the KDE4 location and there were no problems.

For pure Qt applications like VLC, you have to run qtconfig-qt4 to choose the Breeze style.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

My ~/.kde4/share/config/kdeglobals is a symlink to ~/.config/kdeglobals.

Same for Konsole, as it appears on the wiki.
Isn't that enough to take care of colour consistencies between applications that are still using kde4 settings and colours? I haven't had any theming issues.

On a sidenote: I just replaced

/usr/share/sddm/themes/breeze/components/artwork/background.png
/usr/share/plasma/look-and-feel/org.kde.breeze.desktop/contents/splash/images/background.png

with my wallpaper and I love having that smooth transition with no background changes (login -> splash -> desktop).

Meh, can't believe I missed that reply somehow. In any case, it doesn't seem to work. I can run the script manually, so the permissions should be ok.

I'm not entirely sure this is the case so if it works please let me know. I think I saw a similar issue with a startup script not working until I added a .sh extension. I can't test right now, so if you manage to test it before I do, I'd like to know if this is the case.

EDIT: I felt this was a strange requirement but it seems it was also the case in KDE4 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171136

Thanks for the tip, but my script already has the .sh extension. I guess I should make a bug report..

I would really appreciate some help with this annoyance.

With latest Applications and/or Plasma update all my menus reappeared (gtk2 and 3 and qt4)... I don't really changed anything, so I guess there was a bug lying around that was fixed.

I can't change window size when I put mouse cursor near to the window edge. It works by alt + right click or rignt click on window decoration and selecting more -> change size. Do I need to set any particular option to allow window size to be changed the old  way?

To be fair I haven't actually encountered a lot of serios problems with KF5. I haven't experienced much more crashes than with KDE 4 (I actually can't remember the last time an application crahsed in either KF5 or KDE4 but there must have been episodic crashes just nothing systematic or reocurring) nor any noticeable performance regressions nor any noticeable lack of functionality (like with the first versions of KDE4). I actually compiled a list of my issues with KF5 and all of them are cosmetic issues which I guess will be polished away in the next several versions. The most major issue for me at least is the lack of Breeze theme for GTK2/GTK3 - while I don't use a lot of GTK applications on a daily basis the lack of consistency still irritates me. I've also experienced a few graphical glitches here and there (which BTW I have not noticed in the latest Kubuntu release when I reviewed the live usb media so I must examine their set-up and try to find out how they've solved them).

Of course the issues you experience will vary depending on your set-up and what exaclty you're doing. My video card is intel hasweel which seems to be really well supported and using open source drives and I'm no using any particularly complicated functionality on my system (just basic desktop usage).

It has, use dolphin-git from the AUR. It's working fine for me.

Anybody getting lots of random crashes in plasma 5 that seem to be caused by Nvidia update related to Intels Hardware Lock Elision (HLE)? I am getting a lot of random crashes and i am on a fresh install.

I use kdeconnect-frameworks-git and the only issue I have with it is that I actually have to 'ping' my phone before it'll work properly, including the indicator, on every reboot.

Re: KF 5 & Plasma

In Plasma5 I could not find "icontasks" ported to QT5. Icontasks applet was quite useful like controlling Clementine.
this is the old one:
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … icontasks/

I could not find any progress in icontasks porting to QT5, is there an alternative or something?
Thanks
