Re: [SOLVED] can't open a video file

Do you have [extra]/x264 installed?  It is a dependecy of mplayer, but not (it seems) of vlc or mpv - the mpv output says this is h264 encoded, so that library will be required.

x264 is an encoder only, it has no relevance for playback.

@nTia89: I'd say the file is just plain broken. If you downloaded it, try downloading it again. If you made it yourself, something went wrong somewhere, so create it again.

What ffmpeg do you use? One from the aur repositories maybe? If so, try rebuilding and reinstalling it.

Re: [SOLVED] can't open a video file

no, ffmpeg from extra

and yes, it's downloaded but if it's corrupt or incomplete I should be able anyway to open it, no?

Re: [SOLVED] can't open a video file

You could try to convert [parts of] it with ffmpeg. If it is legal and nothing nasty, can you provide a link? Are you certain this is not a fake or an archived porn movie? By the way, did you run vlc in a terminal? I cannot imagine it would not output anything.

Re: [SOLVED] can't open a video file

ffmpeg -i inputfile -acodec copy outputfile.mp4
ffmpeg -i inputfile -ss startingtime -t duration -acodec copy outputfile.mp4
man ffmpeg # for more information especially on vcodec

This might be futile however, if the file is heavily corrupted or damaged. From what I understand vlc does not recognize it either. I would try to unpack it (zip,rar,7z).

Re: [SOLVED] can't open a video file

ffmpeg can't start to convert it with these errors:     http://pastebin.com/YKgyjMLb
and neither file-roller, unrar or 7z can extract it

Re: [SOLVED] can't open a video file

Try an online video converter or one of the tools for windows run through wine. Maybe a windows players could open this? Last resort would be hexedit.

Is this really worth it though? If the video is on the net in one form or another, there should be another version of it.

Re: [SOLVED] can't open a video file

Reading those logs, it appears the file is corrupted. Things like:

:
mp4 warning: corrupted chunk table
:
main error: option sub-original-fps does not exist
:

You never sent a link to the file, so we cannot test it for you.

It's time to mark this thread as [SOLVED]

The indicted file is definitively broken/corrupted as I find the original source, redownloaded and played fine it...this time
