Avatars, Again

[sorry if this is a repost - I was interrupted during the first post and it doesn't seem to have "taken", so "one more time"]

When I first joined these forums, I tried to upload an avatar. It didn't work. I quickly found out that LOTS of people had the same problem, and that it simply seemed to be broken. OK, I thought, no biggy.

However, I am now seeing posts from even newer members of these forums (users with 3 and 4 posts) who *do* have avatars. What gives?

I tried uploading again tonight, using both the "from your computer" and "from URL" methods. No joy in either case. The "from your computer" method says it works, but it doesn't. The "from URL" method at least produces an error message.

How is it that users newer than myself can get avatars working? If you are one of those users, could you share the secret please? Thanks!

Re: Avatars, Again

I think it only works with linking to external, not uploading.

Aside from that you can rest assured that it is not some evil plot against a certain group of members...it's just a bug wink

Come on dibble, admit it. One of the forum "upgrades" was to limit the features of all mac users. tongue

Re: Avatars, Again

Well guys, it doesn't work even when linking to external. When I attempt to link to an external URL, I get the following error message:

Could not write avatar file to local storage. Please contact the board administrator with this message

DEBUG MODE

Line : 177
File : usercp_avatar.php

Now as to limiting us Mac users! ...  big_smile

Now just in case anyone REALLY thought I was on a Mac, rest assured - I am on a good 'ol PC, custom built to be whisper quiet.

Re: Avatars, Again

What's a "mac user"?  Is that some kind of fast food addict?!

Aside from...it's a permissions issue on the server...how many times will I have to say that?  It is also totally beyond my control as I have no shell access to the server.  Not sure why a cron job has never been setup tho...

Re: Avatars, Again

I think you will need to say it at least 3 more times. Possibly stretched out over the course of two months though. That is about..once every 20 days.

hmm.. we could probably provide a workaround.. we could setup a cron job to post to the forum some canned "why is my avatar not working" post, set it to go off every 20 days or something..

Cron job nothing!  Hire me for $20 an hour!  I'll make sure that each post is carefully worded in such a way that searching for the words in the post won't come up with any of the previous posts made, but with just slightly different wording you'd find them all.
As an added bonus, I'll insult an FA or TU in some sublime and barely-noticeable way with every post; for free!  lol

Seriously though.. SOMEONE's gotta have shell access, or at least FTP access to the server, right?  You can chmod through FTP... I've done it.  Well, anyway.. I'm sure it'll get fixed soon enough.  Avatars can become a person's identity; people like cactus, dusty, iph, phrak, aperio, dibble are all immediately recognizable by their avatars.  I feel so.... faceless. sad  *lol*

Re: Avatars, Again

you should be able to upload an avatar via the http upload method, just not the upload from filesystem method.
have you tried that way?

Just tried; I get the same error as Mac57 posted up a few posts.

*shrug*

I'm in no real rush to "gain a face" so to speak, I just wanted to add to the fun thread.  I know _eventually_ I'll put one up there, and the stupendousness of it will blow your collective minds, and I'll become King of the AL Forums.. MWAHAHAHAA--- er.... yes.

Carry on.

Re: Avatars, Again

I tried to get an avatar from the web, it said that it was unsuccessful.
Some usercp error.
So, I saved the file to my hard drive, and added the avatar that way.
I was told it was successful.

EDIT. So much for that idea.
No eagle, at least that I can see.

Macintosh user. I was trying to play off his name mac57. I just now realized how lame that joke really was. Maybe you could install a "block bad joke mod."

Re: Avatars, Again

Shadowhand, did you JUST upload an avatar, or did you do this a long time ago? If you JUST did it, what sort of file format were you using? I have half a suspicion that the http method only accepts specific file formats...

Seriously though, I wonder if this isn't a base bug in whatever package runs these forums? I am a member of numerous forums, all of which have a very similar look n feel, and only ONE of which does not have the same bloody avatar problem! Maybe there is a patch for this in the source for whatever software is running these boards?

Possibly.  Sorry it is so frustrating but as I am sure you can imagine avatars are pretty much bottom of the priorities list.  Sorry.  I can turn them off for everyone if that would make you feel better!

Re: Avatars, Again

#$%#$# Dibble, its all your fault! Fix that thing and do it now! What the hell kind of forum administrator are you anyway? Slack-assed-lazy piece of shit. What do you think we're paying you 150K per year for anyway? Just sit there and make things difficult for everybody, eh? Avatars are a vital part of the services we provide, and you are deliberately sabotaging this effort! I've half a mind to speak to your manager about this I am!

I'm sorry dibble, but any more foul-ups like this and we may have to let you go. This is your last warning. We'll be submitting a substandard employee review over this you know.

Dibble, dibble, we must be proactive in this work. You can't let things slide like this! We didn't rise to the top by being...

...full of shit yeah. I'll never be able to manage a company, I couldn't keep a straight face! ;-) Did I miss any buzzwords?

You DID ensure your choice avatar was 80px X 80px or less, no?

I sure did - maybe I will try 72x72 - maybe GIMP's 80x80 is Arch's >80x>80!

Well, tried 72x72 - no luck with either the local file or the URL method. Same results as before...

Re: Avatars, Again

Well said Dusty. At least Dibble gets what he deserves.     lol

I also can't get this working. I tied with both gif and jpeg, even uploding or web-hosted. So, i guess we'll be known and remembered as no-faces forever.

Re: Avatars, Again

Avatars seem to be working again, at least if you link to them from another site.  I didn't try the top two options, just the bottom one.
