Indeed; linking to an off-site avatar works nicely - I just hope these forums don't get enough traffic for my university to complain at me.

If they do you could always move the image over to imageshack.us or another free image host

In my case, I have done the link to external site route, since everyone said that it worked.
Has anyone tried uploading either a local file or from a website?

OK, never content to leave good enough alone (my motto - if it isn't broken, fix it!) I tried all three methods for avatars. Only the last one works. The first two continue to behave as before.
As one poster mentioned, a drawback of this is that the external site is linked every time an article you posted is viewed. Thats a lot of traffic over time.
Maintainers of this site: good first step! Now, can we fix the remaining problems, to reduce overall internet traffic to our respective sites? Thanks!
BTW, does *anyone* know who is responsible for the avatar functionality? Who do we have to thank for this recent improvement?
