I've installed r8168 because supposedly it's better than r8169 (it seems like the NIC is faster under WIN7). Then I blacklisted r8169 per the wiki. Then I rebooted, and r8168 didn't load automatically. So I wrote a config /etc/modprobe.d/r8168.config with the line "r8168" in it, rebooted and still the module didn't load. I tried manually loading the module and get this:
# modprobe r8168
modprobe: FATAL: Module r8168 not found.I confirmed that the module was there:
# slocate -i r8168
/etc/modprobe.d/r8168.conf
/usr/lib/modules/extramodules-3.15-ARCH/r8168.ko.gz
/var/abs/community/r8168
/var/abs/community/r8168-lts
/var/abs/community/r8168/PKGBUILD
/var/abs/community/r8168/r8168.install
/var/abs/community/r8168-lts/PKGBUILD
/var/abs/community/r8168-lts/linux-3.10.patch
/var/abs/community/r8168-lts/r8168-lts.installI have searched. I've found *tons* of stuff, most of it sounds relevant, but when I read it, it's not. I feel like I'm missing something basic about modules (even though I read the wiki).

The r8168 module wasn't updated for the latest kernel (today?) it seems and I couldn't load it either. Wasn't able to connect my server after updating the kernel because it couldn't load r8168. Just use r8169 now until the r8168 package is updated, then try again and you will be fine. For now, just blacklist r8168 and r8169 will load automatically next reboot.

I figured it out. I was using the ck kernel, and forgot to install the ck version of the module. D'oh!
However, I can't compile the ck version. That's a different matter however.
Marking this "solved".

Just an question:
I'd also used the r8168 module, but I switched (back) to the default one (r8169).
It seems there are no speed different and from what I read the r8168 isn't that maintained anymore, but I could be wrong. ![]()
