[SOLVED] i915 driver not working with 3.15.5-1 kernel

After upgrading my kernel to 3.15.5-1 my graphics fail and I get a screen of death with vertical colour stripes.

Toshiba Satelloite Pro A200
Intel Core2Duo T5450
Video device:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display Controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (secondary) (rev 0c)

After booting, with previous kernels the login tty blinks once, presumably when modesetting takes over and control is passed over to the video driver. It is at this point that the problem occurs with the new kernel.
here's a copy of the Xorg log:

23.746 seems to be where the trouble is: the i915 driver seems not to detect the device even though it appears at 23.443.

Sure enough, disabling modesetting allows tty login, but is not useful as this also stops X from working.
Chrooting and downgrading the kernel to 3.14 or the lts version also works. xf86-video-intel 2.99.912-2-x86-64 works fine with the older kernel.

I also tried a fresh install. the Arch Live CD for July, which contains the 3.15.3-1 kernel works fine, but pacstrap installs a newer kernel from the repo - (is that right?), breaking the installed system.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Re: [SOLVED] i915 driver not working with 3.15.5-1 kernel

Try to downgrade xf86-video-intel package 1 version back, the last one seems to be buggy.

Re: [SOLVED] i915 driver not working with 3.15.5-1 kernel

Seems as if you are using glamor according to your X log. Have you perchance tested with UXA?

I have had issues with SNA in the recent driver, but seems that switching to UXA and ditching all other options is a temporary workaround for me. Sadly this breaks VSync and introduces some tear, but I got rid of other nasties such as lock-ups and flickering.

For extra info, we have different chips you and I, but it might be a common error.

Hi thanks,

The crash still happens when xf86-video-intel is downgraded. It also happens when the package is removed.

The problem is with the tty display crashing before I even get a chance to invoke X. I'll give UXA a go but I think the problem is in the i915 module of the kernel itself.

Re: [SOLVED] i915 driver not working with 3.15.5-1 kernel

Yep, UXA works fine with the older kernel, but doesn't fix the problen with 3.15.5. There seems to be work going on upstream here, here and here so I might have to sit tight with linux-lts for now and hope a fix comes through in a kernel update.

Edit: thanks for the suggestions:it did turn out to be the kernel - it's fixed in the 3.15.7-1 version in testing - all good!
