making use of xwayland in upstream xorg-server version 1.16

I am attempting to test out the new xwayland functionality in weston.

Included relevant code in $HOME/.config/weston.ini:

[core]
modules=desktop-shell.so,xwayland.so

I have tried it with and without xwayland.so included. I have also launched weston with

$ weston-launch -- --modules=xwayland.so

However, the output of any X application that attempts to load is inevitably

Can't open display

The $DISPLAY variable is set, I can confirm, to a unique variable (:1).

Having xwayland merged upstream, I'm not sure if there are still packages that I'm missing to get this to work or not, or if it isn't usable yet. Any tips?

EDIT: I am using xf86-video-ati on this computer.

Works for me. Tried it with xf86-video-nouveau. Try stopping your LoginManager (GDM, KDM) to stop X all together first. Maybe that's interfering.

Re: making use of xwayland in upstream xorg-server version 1.16

I wasn't using a login manager, but even when I stop x altogether and start weston, I get the same error message.

I should probably make a clarification here that again I do not have xwayland-git or xorg-server-xwayland-git installed from the aur. I am trying this from the latest extra/xorg-server 1.16.

Are there any ideas of how I could get to the root of this problem?

EDIT: I just noticed that there is a package xorg-server-xwayland in extra. I feel the great collective facepalm of the internet roll
