When I let my Asus EEEPC (1005HAB) idle on battery (especially if I'm watching something with VLC), after ten minutes the screen turns off. I can move the mouse or press a key to bring it back, but that gets to be annoying when I'm engrossed in a movie. I'm assuming this has something to do with a screensaver or power management setting. Correct?
I'm running Mate 1.8.1. The power management is set to put the display to sleep after 1 hour. And running pacman -Q mate-screensaver returns package not found. I have looked through the dconf settings, but haven't been able to find the correct setting to change (if its even in there).

Just default behaviour. There's a do not disturb feature with youtube? is it, but you could possibly do something with xscreensaver and change the setting that way.
I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...
Look ma, no mouse.

What's the output of 'xset -q'?

Run these two commands in a shell:
xset -dpms
xset s off
If your display does not shut off after ten minutes then it is default X behavior as the cause. In that case put both those commands in a script and tell your desktop environment to run the script at startup if you like.

Thanks for the push in the right direction. I still want the "blanking" screensaver to happen, but I just wanted it to display after an idle time of more than 10 minutes. So in my case I changed it to 30 minutes, for now, using:
xset s 1800
I put that command as one of the commands run at startup, so it should change the delay time at every boot.
Thanks again.

VLC has an option to disable the screensaver. Did you check that? Although it hasn’t worked under Xfce for quite some time…

I checked that and made sure it was set to kill the screensaver. Still had the same problem.
The above fix has worked so far, though. So I'll be using it for the time being.

where is the file to change the xset option?

You should check the wiki if you want to know how to run xset commands when you log in.
