[Solved]Touchpad completely not recognized anymore

Hey guys, bit of a noobie here. I have a c720 acer laptop running Arch. I got the touchpad and suspend working perfectly from the wiki instructions. Then being the idiot that I am I wanted to get Netflix working so I enabled multilibs and installed those (removing the regular ones In the process) so I could install pipelight.

But that broke my touchpad. It won't work at all. Keep getting errors when I re-run the install script for them as well.
then i tried switching the libraries back but there are so many and i'm really getting lost and frustrated.

just seems i always get stuck in an endless loop of broken packages.

Any advice?

Re: [Solved]Touchpad completely not recognized anymore

First off, Welcome to Arch Linux.  Second, Don't Panic.

There should be no problem enabling multilibs.
There are also excellent resources available here, in the IRC, and on the mailing lists.  You will find people more than willing to help; provided you demonstrate initiative in researching your problem and attempts to learn.  I suggest you read the link in my signature, but be aware I am not saying you have done anything untoward (as yet smile )

So, what do you mean by "Broke my Touchpad"?  What errors do you receive? (Specifically)
Have you looked at your Xorg logs?  Did you reboot after changing your libraries?
What kind of touchpad is it?  What kernel are you running?

And please, this is Arch Linux.  Don't just re-install to see if it works a second time -- this is not a toy operating system.  I have not re-installed for years, and my down time has been minimal even though I have broken things more times than I can count.  Let's work the problem...

Edit:  Oh yeah, is your system fully up to date?  In other words, have you performed a pacman -Syu today?
Edit2:  And, a specific answer to your question -- I spend some quality time reading my logs and Goggling things I find that I do not understand that I find in those logs.

Re: [Solved]Touchpad completely not recognized anymore

Hey thanks for helping!

I performed pacman -Syu before and after everything broke. But there were no updates since yesterday.

I looked at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and there are no errors. But there are some lines envolving the trackpad. It looks like it tries to add it several times.  Wasn't sure how to read the log timestamp so i rebooted to see if any new lines were added and it seems like the log file wasn't touched

Here;s a picture of the relevant bit: http://imgur.com/nYVHJlD

kernel version:3.15.7-1-ARCH

Basically it worked when i was installing everything (multilib + pipelight) . Then my computer was freezing up ( it does that, think it's because chrome uses all its memory) so i restarted it with the reboot command. And it hasn't been responding since, no error messages  that i have seen yet either.

Re: [Solved]Touchpad completely not recognized anymore

Could I get you to install wgetpaste and then use it to post the logs to pastebin?  It is  a nice program that allows  you, from the console,  to redirect program output to wgetpaste, which in turn sends it to paste bin and gives you the link, like this:

ewaller$@$odin ~ 1001 %ls -l / | wgetpaste
Your paste can be seen here: http://bpaste.net/show/525293/
ewaller$@$odin ~ 1002 %

If you follow that link, you will see my output (useless, but it serves as an example)  Please use that tool to post your logs and then post the links here.  Thanks.
I need to call it a night, I'll pick this up in the morning.

Re: [Solved]Touchpad completely not recognized anymore

How exactly did you enable your touchpad? There was a kernel update two days ago, so if you used the script from the wiki (not sure if that script even works with the 3.15 version) you need to rerun that script everytime you update your kernel.

You might want to change the thread title to something that is relevant to your problem, or you will receive generic replies about what people do when they mess things up.

If I mess something up, I fix it.

That looks like you have a functioning Cypress APA trackpad on event 11.   It also later tries to attach the device to mouse 0, but thinks better of it.  I am wondering if, before, your system was not picking it up as a touchpad and was treating it as a generic HID mouse.  What does the touchpad do (or not do)?

Also, does your laptop have a touchscreen?   There are cases of an i2C bus driver getting hosed when there are touch pads and touch screens on the same bus.
This (IIRC) was also a function of the kernel version.  Which kernel are you running? ( uname -a )

Edit:  You may also want to read this thread.  It dances around the i2c driver issue and includes information on how to disable that module.  It may or may not be applicable in your situation.

Re: [Solved]Touchpad completely not recognized anymore

What does the touchpad do (or not do)?

Now it does nothing at all.

Before it could be used to move the mouse, both right and left click. As well as scroll using 2 finger scrolling.

Also, does your laptop have a touchscreen?  No, my model does not.

Which kernel are you running?
kernel version:3.15.7-1-ARCH dated: mon july 28 x86_64 GNU/Linux

looked at that thread. The problem is my device is not even shown with cat /proc/bus/input/devices  ( see above post for full output)

Re: [Solved]Touchpad completely not recognized anymore

I did notice this package on my traversing of the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-c720/

I don't think it'll be relevant though and I'd work through the others suggestions first.

Re: [Solved]Touchpad completely not recognized anymore

Wow, that is a leap smile
What happened, were you running a different kernel than the one that had been installed by pacman ?  There are a few ways this can happen
Glad it is working for you now.
