Hello. I've been trying to get my sound to work for my headphones and I've had almost complete success. I can play audio files stored on the computer and I can hear the various sound tests scattered through out the system. The only problem I'm having now is hearing sound in the Chromium browser. Opening audio files with Chromium (which should play the audio file) and trying to listen to youtube videos simply results in me hearing absolutely nothing. I've already checked and made sure that all of my audio channels are unmuted with alsamixer. (side-note: simply running
alsamixerin the command line returns
cannot open mixer: No such file or directoryFor some reason, I have to run
alsamixer -c 1to get alsamixer to start. I used the F6 key to change sound devices and make sure all channels are unmuted)
After reading https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162581, I concluded that I should try to change the default sound device to my headphones. I followed the thread and at some point, the author of the thread said https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=121049 helped him alot. As such, I followed the link to this new thread. I tried running
asoundconf listbut bash just returns a command not found error and thus I can't issue
asoundconf set-default-card <one from the list>I searched through my whole system and it seems I don't even have the asoundrc file. At this point I'm not even sure if the problem is a configuration problem, it might be a problem with the browser. I just have no idea how to begin testing if that is true or not. Any guidance and help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

The PCM volume is set to 0, start with that. Turn IEC958{, Default PCM} off with "amixer sset 'IEC958' off" and "amixer sset 'IEC958 Default PCM' off". You probably also do not want to have auto-mute enabled.
Your setup consists out of two HDMI cards, both from graphics cards I assume, and one analog PCH plus the headset.
If you want to set your headset as default, use modprobe for this, as I already suggested. Follow the wiki, read the whole chapter. You need to use vid and pid for this, only instead of using lspci use lsusb, the vid and pid is the value of ID vid:pid. You should have in your alsa-base.conf something similar to this:
options snd_usb_audio index=0 vid=xxxx pid=yyyyReboot afterwards. Remember that any alsa configuration could be interfering, so check if you have ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf and disable it/them. Using modprobe options alone should be sufficient.

Okay, so I made sure the PCM on all my channels are turned up. When I first attempted to turn off IEC958, I got an error saying that the directory or file for amixer did not exist. I don't know the exact wording of the error as that was on a previous reboot. Now, mysteriously, turning off IEC958 with amixer is working fine. After reading up on the wiki you linked me, I made the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as it didn't exist already. In the file, I have
options snd_usb_audio index=0 vid=046d pid=0a1f
options snd_hda_intel index=1Finally, I searched for .asoundrc and asound.conf in the directories you provided and they don't exist. Many of the threads that I've read previously suggest to edit the options in these files and I couldn't do so because I could never find them.
Oh, and as a side note, after doing these steps, Audacity isn't able to play my mp3 files any more. It says
ALSA error: snd_mixer_attach failed: No such file or directory.
ALSA error: snd_pcm_open failed: No such device.Offline
You have several sound cards using snd-hda-intel so that line is somewhat futile without vid and pid, reread the example on the wiki. As for iec958, that may be the case, because of different order of sound cards. Run 'aplay -l', the headset should be card 0.
Those files can be created, /etc/asound.conf for global and ~/.asoundrc for user specific configuration. Wiki explains important parts of it, from basic syntax to somewhat sophisticated setups, but there are also references in further reading/see also section.
Reconfigure Audacity to use PCH then.

So setting those options in alsa-base.conf makes my headset not work at all in linux. It doesn't show up in the KDE Audio and Video Settings, Audacity or Alsamixer. I have a feeling I might be typing in the options incorrectly.
And also to be sure, how do I get the name of the sound card that is to be put in the alsa-base.conf? I tried

I do not think snd_usbmidi_lib is necessary there, maybe even harmful. Also apparently something is wrong, since headset is still at fourth position, could you post lsusb? Why not just set PCH as index 1? You could also try -0, if I recall correctly it will take headsets place if not present.
You should be able to use ids, but vid and pid is preferable. Try without the midi line first, if it does not work try:

I tried both to remove the midi line and then I tried your suggestion, both booted up without my headset being recognized by KDE at least. My lsusb while running an alsa-base.conf with your suggestion is:

I keep forgetting that you run KDE. I would delete any KDE sound settings for now, make sure the modprobe file is there and reboot. You could find out if this is a KDE problem by booting into another DE or preferably using something light like openbox only or simply using a console without KDE running/started, and then see how the cards are arranged. Maybe some part of KDE provides its own version of alsa-base.conf. What is inside /etc/modprobe.d and /etc/modules-load.d? You could also post somewhere (pastebin) the log of udev while attaching the headset to usb:
udevadm monitor -p -u > /tmp/headset.logOffline
