Unable to start X

Hi All,

I saw a couple questions about being unable to start X after upgrading xorg to 1.16. The reason was xf86-video-intel not being upgraded. In my situation, my xf86-video-intel is at the latest version. This is the error when I start X:

[    66.218] _XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
[ 66.218] _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running
[ 66.218] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 66.221] (EE) Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running(EE)
[ 66.223] (EE)
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
	 at http://wiki.x.org
 for help.
[ 66.229] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/home/ly/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.
[ 66.231] (EE)
[ 66.232] (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.

My .xinirc is:

/usr/bin/xscreensaver -no-splash &
exec gnome-session

Does anybody know what my problem is?

Thank you.

Re: Unable to start X

Please also check the log file at "/home/ly/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

Is there anything in this file?

That file has exactly what is shown on the screen (which is what I pasted).

I log in an account automatically and run startx manually. The problem might be related to the intel video driver because I have 2 machines both running Arch. The only difference between them is the video drivers (open source ati driver vs intel ati driver).

Re: Unable to start X

Use e.g. htop to see what processes are running. Maybe something else is quietly starting X somewhere.
Are there any errors / warnings in systemd's journal?

This is the htop http://i59.tinypic.com/16091dw.jpg.
While startx was running, I saw Xorg.bin in the htop.
And this is ps -ef while startx is running:

I log in an account automatically and run startx manually. The problem might be related to the intel video driver because I have 2 machines both running Arch. The only difference between them is the video drivers (open source ati driver vs intel ati driver).

Might be, might not be. I use the xf86-video-ati drivers and am having the exact same problem (which is why I was searching the forums and found your thread). I have exactly the same behavior and the same error messages. In the meantime I downgraded back to Xorg 1.15.2-1 until we figure out what is happening.

Moving to NC...

Now I don't think it was because of the intel driver because I re-installed Arch and didn't find any issue.
