[SOLVED] Problem with UEFI motherboard

The problem seems to be my backlight. Upon boot the screen appears to halt however I can blindly login as root and run shutdown commands.

Hey guys I have been using linux for about two years now and I just recently built my own computer with a UEFI motherboard.

The motherboard is ASUS Z97-AR.

I have been trying to install arch for the past two days with little success. I've also searched the forums and haven't found a clear solution yet. I first tried grub as my bootloader but when I rebooted I was prompted directly to the UEFI menu.

I then followed this guide:

and used gummiboot as my bootloader. This also didn't work all too well.

When I rebooted from that installation arch actually started to boot but then halted and froze. If you're familiar with this kind of issue I would be very grateful to hear your advice/solution.

This is what the problem looks like when it starts to boot:


             Mounting /boot....

[      2.947553] kvm: disabled by bios


Other times it will halt at

[   ok   ] Started udev Kernel Device Manager

I used mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sda3 and mkfs.ext4 for the rest of the partitions


This is my partition table as of now:

Use the Arch Wiki: other guides at likely error prone or out of date, or both...

Also, provide details of your setup: partitions, configs, etc.

I started with the wiki and followed the guidelines for the UEFI boot, but I haven't had success so I started searching for other tutorials from people with similar issues.

There is no detail about what you actually did during your install, or information of the details of your boot setup.  Referring to a non-arch guide does not say what you actually did, and does not provide any output that will give people information to assess where you went wrong. Best bet is to follow the Beginner's Guide (which is just as useful for experts!) at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/beginners'_guide

That has good information on setting up uefi boot as well.

Once you try that and also provide more detailed information then it is possible one of the members of this forum may be able to help.

My problem is that the installation seems to work however it halts midway through boot. I'm trying to figure out what is causing this specific
issue.

It looks something likes this:

The Beginner's Guide allows people with various hardware, to install arch using a number of choices along the way.  If you are installing to a uefi capable motherboard, then it is important to check that when you boot the install media that the initial boot is confirmed to have been done as a uefi boot.  Did you check that, and if so how?  Did you use a DVD or a usbkey?  If a usbkey how did you prepare it?  During the install when you are booted to the install media, it is certainly possible to capture the log files and indeed before finally rebooting it is possible to send the log files to another computer so that they can be shared with others such as on this forum, via a link to a pastebin file for example.

What settings are there in your BIOS for uefi or legacy boot options? Usually it is possible to set the BIOS to boot both, or either separately.

During the install it is important to confirm that the steps necessary to install additional crucial files once the main pacstrap command has been completed to make the root directory in the target, have been done correctly, with two different methods possible: either before chrooting to the newly installed root directory or afterwards, but the specific commands are different in each case. Care is needed to ensure that paths are correct.  Unless a copy/paste copy of the commands you executed at the time are presented here then it is difficult to know what went wrong, or what needed to be done differently to get the install to complete properly.

When it comes to the boot setup during the install there are choices, for example of where to put the boot files. I note that you have /boot set up as your EFI partition. What is actually in that directory once you have completed the install process?  Again, before rebooting you can run an ls -l command on /boot and copy that to a file to pass on to people here to have a look at.  Are your kernel files correctly placed in /boot at the end of the install?

Does your /etc/fstab have the correct entries just before you reboot?

So if you can provide as much detail as possible about what you did then there will be a chance of offering some help and advice.  At the present there is no tangible information to respond to other than pointing you to the standard wiki pages.

After you have chrooted to the installation

journalctl -b 1

Should give the log of the last boot (the one where the system hung on boot)

That log seems shows an error free boot + shutdown triggered by powerbutton
After boot you should have left with a login prompt
If it was missing does hitting enter produce it or alt+F2 should take you to terminal 2 which should have the login prompt there as well.

That's the issue I can not get into any login prompt! sad

Neither of those produces a login prompt either, and yes, I have followed the beginner's guide.

It seems to be stuck and unable to continue the boot procedure after:

[   OK   ] Started udev Kernel Device Manager
[   OK   ] Created slice system-systemd\x2dblacklight.slice.

I do not think the boot is hanging.
You can test this by blindly logging in as root then

systemctl poweroff

Which should cleanly shutdown the system again
As to why the display is lost I can think of two possible explanations ( there are probably many others )
The backlight is being set too low so the screen is too dark or it is an issue with the nouveau display driver.
Edit:
If it is a backlight issue it might be due to a change in the 3.16 kernel from gummiboot edit the command line options to add the following to see if reverting to the old behaviour helps

video.use_native_backlight=0

I can not suggest how to fix it if it is an issue with nouveau

My graphics card is an nvidia GEFORCE GTK 750 TI

I'm going to try installing the drivers via pacman by chrooting into the installation.
