Whenever I download something in Chromium and click its name in the download bar, firefox pops up, suggesting I open the file in my default program for that type of file. This is, needless to say, not the expected or desired behavior, and I've as yet found no way of rectifying it. I thought it had something to do with my mimeapps.list, but I challenge you to find the word firefox in it:
When I open those files by double clicking on them or using xdg-open, they open in their default programs, as defined in my mimeapps.list.
What's going on?

exo-web-browser.desktop ?
Are you using Xfce? If not, what DE/WM are you using?

I'm using Openbox as a window manager and do not remember installing Xfce. I found "Exec=exo-open --launch WebBrowser %u" in the file, which I did see in /usr/share/applications, but I've never heard of the software. I may have played with it one day, or perhaps Gnome offers it.

Turns out I was wrong. I have found now that opening certain file types using xdg-open does in fact open them in Firefox, even if mimeapps.list specifies that they should be opened with a certain application. This appears primarily to happen with office documents with the extensions doc and docx, etc. xdg-mime claims the correct file association, and Firefox knows what the default application is.
Is there a cache somewhere that never gets cleared, or something I am missing about how xdg-open looks up how to open things? And why do office documents have such long, complex mime types? Is it possible to write a catch-all association for the file extensions themselves?
