Ok, so I set up my printer via cups. For good measure I also downloaded gnome-cups-manager and set it up that way. I can now print from firefox, thunderbird, and openoffice.
Problem is that I can't print from a bunch of other apps.. specifically evince and leafpad. What's the deal.. evince is a gnome-app and I set this thing up via the gnome-cups-manager so I figured I'd have printing but even if I run evince as root and use the add function it doesn't give me my printer from the list. Ug.

A few days after my initial post there was a new version of acroread that worked with cups. Not sure if it is coincidence or not. Maybe this (evince and leafpad for me) is a bug that should be filed?
