kernel version: 3.15, 3.16, 3.17.
when i do: `root@server /]# mount /dev/sda1 /boot` i get the following in dmesg:
--
[ 887.783451] EXT4-fs (sda1): mounting ext3 file system using the ext4 subsystem
[ 887.785417] EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
--
but /boot remains empty and the mount does not show in /proc/mounts or anywhere else.
im kinda lost here, what can i do/try? problem persists after reboot (intact, it started after a reboot)
Remco
note: it happens with ext3/4 and btrfs partitions

i can mount things if i boot with init=/bin/sh doesn't help me much tho

Maybe /dev/sda1 is already mounted somewhere ?
please post the output of mount just afer booting.
the output of df -h might also be useful.
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
(A works at time B) && (time C > time B ) ≠ (A works at time C)

You could also look into the systemd journal with journalctl.
i'm sorry for my poor english wirting skills…

in addition to what's already been mentioned by others, posting your /etc/fstab could be useful.

Andy, thanks for the pointer, it is indeed a systemd issue. it quickly unmounts it. if i do `mount /data && df`, the mount does show up. i get this in the journal logs:
--
Aug 30 17:02:47 server kernel: EXT4-fs (sda1): mounting ext3 file system using the ext4 subsystem
Aug 30 17:02:47 server kernel: EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: data=ordered
Aug 30 17:02:47 server systemd[1]: Unit boot.mount is bound to inactive service. Stopping, too.
Aug 30 17:02:47 server systemd[1]: Unmounting /boot...
Aug 30 17:02:47 server systemd[1]: Unmounted /boot.

Systemd parses /etc/fstab to generate [mount] services, so follow ooo's suggestion. For more information read 'systemd-fstab-generator'.
Use

tags to mark output of a command.

I have the same problem following last upgrade few days ago. Hard disk partitions /dev/sdax are mounted as expected from fstab, but I am unable to mount my USB stick whatever the filesystem on it. Mount does nothing, dmesg looks OK, and fstab contains no line referring to /dev/sdb (device associated with my USB stick).
I have no idea what to do. Did you solve you problem, remcohn ?

Does fstab have anything referencing your mount point?
In my fstab I have the line
LABEL=usbstuff /mnt/usb auto defaults,noauto,noatime 0 0
But I regularly mounted other things to /mnt/usb with a full mount command. Since some recent update (I suspect systemd) mount would silently fail* to mount anything else to /mnt/usb but mounting the same things to eg. /mnt/test worked.
* dmesg said something about mounting with opts:(null) which definitely isn't right, but it's not exactly an explicit error either.

But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.

alphaniner,
you guessed right, simply renaming /mnt/usb solved the problem.
Thanks.

I just had the same problem after re-encrypting a luks volume. When trying, messages in journal appeared:
kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-4): mounting ext2 file system using the ext4 subsystem
kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-4): mounted filesystem without journal. Opts: (null)
systemd[1]: boot.mount: Unit is bound to inactive unit dev-disk-by\x2duuid-222dd87e\x2d5abc\x2d1337\x2dab36\x2d82b500731fe1.device. Stopping, too.
systemd[1]: Unmounting /boot...
systemd[1]: Unmounted /boot.
After hints here about issues with systemd, a
systemctl daemon-reload
and
systemctl daemon-reexec
solved it for me.

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to go ahead and close this old thread now.
