Arch crashes on core 2 duo PC...

Hello

First post here...

I just installed Arch on my PC, with XFCE.  Initially I was vert impressed, looked good and was very fast on my admitteddly aged PC (Core 2 duo, 2GB ram, Asus P5L-MX mobo).  However, every so often, and seeminggly at random, the system freezes, the screen ging black with some broken horizontal lines at the top third; the Caps Lock and another (unidentified) lights on the keyboard flash.  If I give the "three fingered salute" (Ctrl + Alt + Del) the system re-boots and is OK for a while.  FWIW I get the same problem with recent versions of Ubuntu and other Ubuntu-derived distributions, but here I get a messge about kernel panic.  The only distribution that works reliably on the system is openSuse (13.1).

Any thoughts?  I'd really like to give Arch a fair trial.

TIA

Andrew

Re: Arch crashes on core 2 duo PC...

Look through dmesg and your journal immediately after a freeze: it is only with error messages that this sort of thing can be debugged.

Re: Arch crashes on core 2 duo PC...

What Jason said. Check the journal output.

Also run memory test to make sure RAM is ok.

Re: Arch crashes on core 2 duo PC...

Both

Thanks or your replies.

I just ran the memory test included on the current Arch download (Memtest86+ 5.01) and it does not show any errors in RAM.

I have to admit to not being very familiar with fault-finding in Linux.  Are you suggesting that I run dmesg immediately the PC reboots after a freeze (putting the output into a file which I can post here)?  What is the "journal" to which you refer?

Thanks again

Andrew

They're refering to journald, accessible through journalctl. See `man journalctl`.

Re: Arch crashes on core 2 duo PC...

Thanks for the clarification.

I just booted up the PC with Arch installed, and true to form it crashed within a few minutes!  Immediately it re-booted I ran the following commands:

   dmesg > boot

and

   journalctl -k -b -1 > journal

So I have two text files which don't mean a lot to me at the moment.  Is there any way to attach them to a message here, or should I paste the contents in (they're a bit long as you can imagine)?

Thanks again

Andrew

Attaching files is not possible.

you can paste content in using code tags , see https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode .
For long logs, most people use a pastebin site .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

OK, thanks.  I'll try pasting the outputs in - I'm sure I'll be told if it's too long...  I'll do it two posts in case.
