[SOLVED] Non-blinking cursor on starting X

I followed the beginner's guide to install Archlinux on my laptop (Acer 5750G), and I installed xorg-server and the Nouveau drivers for the 550M card. When trying to start the X-server with the config file obtained from "X -configure" I end up with a single non-blinking cursor on my screen. The output from X -configure ends with the line

(EE) Server terminated with error (2). Closing log file.conf.d"

with Xorg.0.log

Xorg detected your mouse at device /dev/input/mice.
Please check your config if the mouse is still not
operational, as by default Xorg tries to autodetect
the protocol.
[ 33.819]
Your xorg.conf file is /root/xorg.conf.new

[ 33.819] To test the server, run 'X -config /root/xorg.conf.new'

If I use the generated config file to start the X-server (X -config path), I end up with a single non-blinking cursor on the screen. If I hold the power button and reboot that way I get the Xorg.0.log pasted below. Waiting does not help. I also tried using nVidia drivers, in which case at least the last four lines of the below log are missing. I do not have a full log saved of that.

Re: [SOLVED] Non-blinking cursor on starting X

Why are you running X -configure  ?
Why are you running (trying to run) X as root?
When you get the blinking cursor, rather than force a power down, what happens if you press ctrl-alt-F2?

Re: [SOLVED] Non-blinking cursor on starting X

I am running X -configure because a guide on the internet told me to, this is my first install. I run as root because (thinking as a Windows user probably) more permissions means it's easier to make it work. I'll try to find better answers for those. The last question I can luckily answer completely: absolutely nothing. ctrl-alt-F2 doesn't work, ctrl-c doesn't work, ctrl-z doesn't work. I haven't found an input which does work yet. It's completely frozen (been on it for about 15 minutes now, nothing happened), except that the HDD-activity LED blinks about once every second.

Great read in your signature by the way, I will attempt to follow it.

By the way, I forgot to say -- Welcome to Arch Linux smile

In general, you should not need to run X -configure.   Also, please, don't log in as root and run X.  It really is not a good idea and has serious security implications.   Stay with the Arch Beginner's guide, and not "a guide on the Internet".   My suggestion is to do the following:

Add your primary user to the 'wheel' group.
Configure sudo to allow the wheel group to elevate themselves to root permissions using their password. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sudo
Remove any X configurations you created.
Log in as your primary user.
Run 'startx' and see what happens.
If it does not work, capture the output and post it here.

Re: [SOLVED] Non-blinking cursor on starting X

Tried, deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf and ran startx. It still doesn't work, but this time the error message is quite clearly "Fatal server error: no screens found". I found a thread on these forums for a similar issue which said to install the Intel drivers as well (it's one of those Optimus laptops) which did fix that error. Now the screen goes black for a few moments, then the program exits mostly successfully ([  2935.069] (EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.). The error thrown here is "[  2934.383] Error dropping master: -13(Permission denied)". Full log below. I'll figure out how to make it use the nVidia chip at a later date. Is this error something I can "fix" by actually giving it something useful to do, i.e. a display manager to run? I'd rather have a decent idea before I screw this up more.

Is this error something I can "fix" by actually giving it something useful to do, i.e. a display manager to run? I'd rather have a decent idea before I screw this up more.

Yes, you need to either use a Display Manager (and install a DE) or copy /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc and add your DE/WM & other autostart programs there...

Re: [SOLVED] Non-blinking cursor on starting X

Thanks to you both for the help, KDE just started perfectly. Now my touchpad doesn't work but that's very much off-topic for this thread. Thanks again.
