Hi All,
This related to the following post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=186706
In essence, it would seem that the generic VESA driver doesn't work with Xorg 1.16. This is apparently due to Xorg now being rootless, whilst VESA still requires root access. For those wishing to use a generic driver, there are two alternatives available that I've tested and confirmed as working (at least on the intel chipset):
xf86-video-modesetting
xf86-video-fbdev
Thanks to Trilby for the fbdev suggestion, and GrimPirate for the modesetting suggestion.

Gusar's post in the other thread is noteworthy. I happily defer to his greater experience in video-related topics, and his posts suggests modesetting should be the first choice of these two.

Does the generic VESA driver work if you switch back to the old way i.e. run X as root?

Not tried it. Logically I would imagine so, given VESA worked/works on Xorg 1.15 and earlier. But then I don't know yet how to run 1.16 as root (and it's a looong way down the bottom of my "to learn" list).
Personally won't miss VESA as modesetting and fbdev do the job just fine. Not sure if it's worth flagging VESA as out of date or not given the current situation. Certainly it no longer seems viable as an automatic fallback option anymore...
