change X resolution on fly

How to change X resolution on fly?
Of course I don't mean CTRL+ALT+PLUS, because it changes only monitor resolution, not X resolution.
I know that is possible, because I have seen it on LiveCD distro called Slax.
They have small icon in kde, where you can just click and whole desktop changes resolution.
How to do it manually? Or what application should I install?

You can use xrandr!
