Been finding that vlc is not able to play any wmv files either... mplayer does though. Dunno a root cause.

I get the same on my system. Perhaps ffmpeg is to blame? Have you tried compiling it from git?

I understand... just wondering if you uninstalled the ffmpeg-full packages and tried the repo vlc if it also fixed your issue.
