Chromium NPAPI not working

I tried to use chromium-npapi from the AUR, but neither the VLC nor Java plugins work.
Java says that it crashed, and asks to reload the page, and VLC has a greyed out "Plugin could not be loaded" message.
There was nothing of interest in the program's output when run from a terminal, so I'll omit that here, but if it would, in fact, be useful, I'd be happy to post it.
Before you suggest I use something that supports NPAPI like Firefox/Midori: I need to try to stream video to a Chromecast, and Videostream isn't working well.

My end goal is to stream video (MKVs, but I know how to use Handbrake if absolutely necessary) to a Chromecast from my computer, so any other means to that end would be extremely appreciated.
I'm looking forward to VLC Chromecast support, but until then I'll try to get this working.

Fedora believes in "software freedom" - that is, restricting user software choices to those deemed appropriately licensed by The Powers That Be.
Arch believes in "freedom", as well - the user has control over his or her system and can do what he wants with it.
