Kernel26 and SCSI PC card access

Running Arch fully updated, including latest 2.6 kernel in current, and using only current and extra repositories for software. I have an external scsi chain wth three entities, in this order:

MO device
Zip 250
PC Card reader (SD, etc.)

I notice that with the third device (which can only be configured to be the final device because it's built to automatically terminate the chain), I can't mount the card unless I first run fdisk on it. If I just try to mount it, I'm told the device doesn't exits. The device is

/dev/sdc1

But if I first simply run

fdisk /dev/sdc

and then immediate quit fdisk, I can then mount the card successfully. Anyone know why this is the case? I don't find this with, say, Kubuntu, and I don't remember this being the case with Arch in the past.
