Installation CD tries to boot GRUB

Hi all. I am trying to do a fresh install on a new HDD, I downloaded the latest ISO and burned it to a CD and when I boot the CD it goes straight to trying to boot GRUB for an unknown reason and gives the message:

error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue> _

I had already partitioned the hard drive and followed the instructions to add +1MiB for a MBR partition since the wiki says to do so if you are using GPT, perhaps I need to start on a blank drive and partition after booting the CD, or am I missing something here?

Edit: I started with a blanked hard drive and now it gives the same error but now it says:

error: no such partition.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue> _

Using any older install CD seems to not cause the error, but the mirrorlist refuses to sync so I can't get past the pacstrap step.

Edit 2: I've run into the same problem this guy has when I tried booting the install cd after I followed the example here for gdisk.
