acpi says discharging; plugged in and charging

On a Samsung laptop the Gnome battery icon thing and the acpi command have stopped reporting a charging state when the computer is plugged in. I'm not sure when this started, but almost certainly within the past week. Both report that the battery is discharging, but the time remaining does gradually go up.

I am a little bit concerned that this could be doing damage to the battery life, but I'm really not an expert on hardware. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Re: acpi says discharging; plugged in and charging

$ cat /sys/module/battery/parameters/cache_time
# echo 0 > /sys/module/battery/parameters/cache_time

Any changes?

Note: Remember the original value in case you need to restore it.

No change. The original value was 1000, which I've restored now.

Re: acpi says discharging; plugged in and charging

I found a kernel bug that describes the problem, it is a regression in 3.16.3 - I'll update this thread when there is a solution.

Philosophy is looking for a black cat in a dark room. Metaphysics is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there. Religion is looking for a black cat in a dark room that isn't there and shouting "I found it!". Science is looking for a black cat in a dark room with a flashlight.

Re: acpi says discharging; plugged in and charging

I can't decide whether to reply here, where you replied, or on your original thread, but here we go.

The original kernel bug, if it is the same bug you are seeing, was patched in 3.14 (if I read correctly), but we're seeing a regression now. As for where to look in the journal, have a look at the time you closed the lid and see if it suspended at all, and if so when it resumed.
